Can’t afford a Steam Machine? You can now turn your PS5 into one with a new spin on Linux — but I really wouldn’t recommend it

  • PS5 Bazzite Deck is a new spin on this gaming-focused version of Linux
  • It allows you to boot your PS5 to a Steam Deck interface and play PC games
  • You need to jailbreak your Sony console to run it (via the PS5 Linux loader), and that’s a risky path to take for a number of reasons

Don’t want to fork out all that cash for a Steam Machine? If you’ve got a PS5, you could turn it into a spin on Valve’s gaming PC thanks to a custom version of a Linux distro — although the major catch is you’ll need to jailbreak your console.

TechPowerUp noticed the PS5 Bazzite Deck project on GitHub, which takes this flavor of the gaming-focused Bazzite distro and adapts it for Sony‘s console. (Bazzite Deck is different from vanilla Bazzite, as it was built specifically for handhelds to offer an experience similar to SteamOS for the likes of the Asus ROG Ally — but without some of the headaches of running Valve’s OS on that portable).
