‘CBS Evening News’ Interrupted As Cameraman Suffers Medical Emergency

CBS News said that a cameraman is “okay and recovering” after he suffered a media emergency during a live broadcast of CBS Evening News from Taiwan.

Anchor Tony Dokoupil was toward the end of the broadcast when he stopped and said, “Is he OK? We’re going to take a quick break. We have a medical emergency here.” Off camera, Dokoupil could be heard saying, “We’re calling a doctor.” The broadcast then went to Matt Gutman, who was in New York and did the sign off.

“Tonight during the final segment of CBS Evening News, our cameraman on set suffered a medical emergency. Thankfully, he’s okay and recovering,” the network said in a statement.

Dokoupil is anchoring from Taipei during President Donald Trump’s two day summit with President Xi Jinping in Beijing. There were reports that the network’s visa to base the newscast in China arrived too late, but the choice to broadcast from Taiwan instead centered the broadcast in a locale that is a primary geopolitical concern of the summit.

Dokoupil said at the opening of the broadcast, “On the surface, it might look like all the action is over there,” referring to Beijing. He added, “We will soon see images of President Trump and Xi Jinping as they negotiate the Iran war, tariffs, critical minerals trade and more. But if you zoom out from the state visit, you see one of the most important geopolitical stories of our time, and the big question tonight, will China, under Xi Jinping, try to take over Taiwan, risking war and economic catastrophe? This is what could happen here on the shores and in the streets if Xi decides to invade.”
