CBS’s Official Fire Country Demotion Is Mind-Boggling Amid New Spinoff

[

Fire Country is getting a major downgrade from CBS and that’s confusing, considering the network’s plans for another spinoff. The Max Thieriot-led first-responder spent its first three years without any major disruptions, which gave viewers a sense of security. Network TV’s 2025-2026 cycle changed that, however, when Fire Country was rocked by two cast departures, as Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila ended their respective stints as Vince and Gabriela.

Understandably, the move garnered strong opinions from its loyal followers. Arcila made it clear that it wasn’t her decision to leave, which indirectly suggested that it was also the case for Burke. Per the creative team behind Fire Country, the move was part of an effort to reinvent itself. At the same time, CBS officially launched its first spinoff — Morena Baccarin’s Sheriff Country. Ahead of the year’s end, Fire Country is once again dealt with a big blow, making its future less exciting.

After confirming CBS’s fall 2026 schedule, the Eye Network shared specific details about what to expect from some of its upcoming shows. That included the confirmation that Fire Country season 5 will have a reduced order of 13 episodes. This is a significant demotion from the show’s regular 20-episode years, excluding the truncated 2023-2024 cycle due to the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023.

CBS’s NCIS Downgrade Just Got Exponentially Worse Despite Backlash

Not long after CBS announced a major NCIS downgrade, the disappointing news just got exponentially worse thanks to an unexpected story update.

Fire Country will retain its 9 PM ET slot on Friday nights when it returns this fall, but it’s unclear if the show will be replaced by a different show when it wraps its shortened season. For what it’s worth, it isn’t the only show on CBS’s roster to have a shorter 2026-2027 TV cycle. The NCIS franchise also got a demolition, with NCIS: Origins season 3 and NCIS: Sydney season 4 getting their episode count slashed in half. Matlock season 3 has been given only 13 episodes, as well.

What Fire Country Season 5’s Reduced Episode Count Means For Its Future

What makes Fire Country‘s fate more confusing than the others is the fact that it is the most popular out of the bunch, with the show doing well in ratings consistently. Beyond that, CBS is also expanding the franchise with a medical spinoff, further proof of the first-responder procedural’s popularity. Granted that Sheriff Country has outranked its parent series, it’s still more successful than the majority of shows on the network’s portfolio.

Now, the question is whether this demotion is an indication of the show’s standing on the network. Aside from the medical series spinoff, it was previously reported that CBS was also exploring the possibility of doing a Jared Padalecki-led offshoot, although that project hasn’t had any update in quite a while. Assuming that Fire Country gets renewed for season 6, it’s also curious if there’s a chance for the network to bring back its episode count to its normal levels.
