China Box Office: ‘Dear You’ Holds Top Spot

Jinant Film & TV’s family drama “Dear You” retained its position at the top of the China box office during the May 15–17 weekend, pulling in RMB282 million ($41.5 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.

Directed by Lan Hongchun and starring Li Sitong and Wang Yantong, the film has now reached a cumulative total of $75million. The story centers on Grandma Ye Shurou, a woman from the Chaoshan region whose quiet twilight years are upended when her debt-ridden grandson, Xiaowei, travels to Thailand to find his rumored billionaire grandfather, Zheng Musheng. The search uncovers a hidden love affair spanning half a century, revealing that the person Grandma had been exchanging letters with for decades was a complete stranger.

Zhonghe Qiancheng’s suspense thriller “Vanishing Point” held the second spot, adding $5.7 million for a cumulative total of $60.9 million. Directed by Cheng Wei-hao and starring Zheng Kai and Liu Haocun, the adaptation of the novel “Sea Anemone” explores a series of chilling secrets within a residential compound, triggered by the mysterious disappearance of a child on the winter solstice.

“Cold War 1994” secured third place, taking in $2.3 million to push its total to $40.4 million. Produced by Edko Films and directed by Longman Leung, the Hong Kong police prequel features a cast led by Daniel Wu and Terrance Lau. Set in the years preceding the handover, the film details the early power struggles and systemic corruption within the police force that set the stage for the original franchise.

Debuting in fourth place, Amazon MGM Studios’ mystery-comedy “The Sheep Detectives” earned $1.6 million in its two-day opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five, the sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2” added $600,000 for a cumulative total of $14.3 million.

Mainland China’s overall weekend grosses reached $55.3 million, while the 2026 year-to-date revenue stands at $2.13 billion, down 45.9% from the same period in 2025.
