Chris Carter’s Cut Of ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn’ Gets A Release Almost 20 Years Later Amid Ryan Coogler’s Reboot At Hulu

Chris Carter is finally getting the director’s cut of The X-Files movie he intended to release almost 20 years ago.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe — Vrach Frankenshteyn is set to premiere on August 14 on Disney+ and Hulu, as the streamer is also working on a reboot by Ryan Coogler.

Originally released in 2008, the supernatural thriller was directed by Carter, who also co-wrote it alongside Fran Spotnitz. The X-Files: I Want to Believe was a sequel to the 1998 film and released six years after the main series ended. David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi reprise their roles as Fox Mulder, Dana Scully and Walter Skinner, respectively.

“When a group of women is mysteriously abducted, it becomes a case right out of The X-Files,” reads the logline for the film. “Years after walking away from the FBI, Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully are pulled back from the shadows when a federal agent vanishes without a trace. In a case you’d never see on TV, their only lead is a disgraced, defrocked priest claiming to have horrific psychic visions of the crime. Forced to confront the ghosts of their past, the partners must navigate a chilling winter landscape and an even darker human monstrosity. The truth of these crimes is out there somewhere … and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it.”

The film is a contemporary take on Dr. Frankenstein, and Carter’s cut intensifies the horror elements that were removed from the theatrically released movie to land at a PG-13 rating.

Carter’s cut of the film also premieres as Coogler works on a reboot of the sci-fi series. The Oscar winner is writing and directing the pilot, which is set to star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

The reboot series is also set to star Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand and Sofia Grace Clifton.
