Before The X-Files chased the unknown, a cult mystery classic cracked the case, and now it’s quietly taking over streaming.
Premiered in 1993, the iconic sci-fi series follows the FBI duo, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), as they investigate unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Before The X-Files became a cultural phenomenon, it drew inspiration from television classics that blended suspense, horror, and speculative sci-fi, such as The Twilight Zone (1959–1964), Night Gallery (1969–1973), Tales from the Darkside (1983–1988), and, above all, Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974–1975). Now, the cult classic mystery series that paved the way for The X-Files is quietly enjoying a resurgence.
Over 35 years after its premiere, Twin Peaks is quietly dominating streaming. Created by David Lynch, the series debuted on ABC in 1990 and aired for two seasons on ABC before being canceled in 1991, following the eccentric FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he investigates the murder of teenager Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the strange and enigmatic town of Twin Peaks.
Now, nearly four decades after its debut, Twin Peaks (seasons 1–2) is the No. 1 TV show on Mubi for today, July 9. The first two seasons of Twin Peaks are also streaming on Paramount+ and for free on Pluto TV. Over 25 years after it was canceled, Twin Peaks returned for a third season on Showtime in 2017.
Twin Peaks‘ cast also includes Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Richard Beymer, Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn, Warren Frost, Peggy Lipton, James Marshall, Everett McGill, Jack Nance, Ray Wise, Joan Chen, Piper Laurie, Kimmy Robertson, Eric Da Re, Harry Goaz, Michael Horse, Sheryl Lee, Russ Tamblyn, and Kenneth Welsh.
Twin Peaks season 1 received rave reviews, resulting in a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, for bending traditional television conventions into a mesmerizing mix of mystery, drama, horror, and surrealism – creating an eerie and one-of-a-kind series whose strange charm remains impossible to replicate, coupled with an 85% audience score.
Due to interference from the network, season 2 suffered a drop in critical and audience reception, dropping to 65% and 88% scores, as the show delivered an underwhelming resolution to its central mystery and struggled to create equally compelling new ones, yet its hypnotic moments and surreal brilliance were enough to keep fans captivated by the secrets lurking beyond the Red Room.
In the years since its original two-season run, Twin Peaks has developed a passionate cult following and earned recognition as a groundbreaking influence on television drama, frequently appearing on lists of the best TV shows of all time.
Furthermore, Twin Peaks had a profound influence on The X-Files, especially in shaping its shadowy atmosphere and unconventional mix of drama, surrealism, and dark humor. David Duchovny also previously appeared on Twin Peaks as transgender DEA agent Denise Bryson, and his Fox Mulder character is often viewed as a spiritual counterpart to Dale Cooper.
