Cyberpunk 2077 Second Expansion Has Fans Excited For The Game’s Future

[

Cyberpunk 2077 has a rocky yet ultimately fantastic legacy behind it after more than half a decade. CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk video game IP being in its infancy is even more terrific, with only Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion thus far, and fans are patiently awaiting whatever comes next. Of course, there is the animated TV show Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to enjoy for extracurricular lore, as well as plenty of Cyberpunk 2077 comic books.

Just like Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead franchises, CD Projekt Red’s Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises have blossomed to become fascinating IPs. Today, Cyberpunk 2077 has lost no momentum since its latest updates pedestaled it in terms of quality and popularity.

As shared on Reddit, Cyberpunk 2077 hit an astounding concurrent Steam player count of 101.5K recently. This would be a phenomenal milestone for many games, much less Cyberpunk 2077, but it’s particularly exceptional for “a 5.5 year old story game, especially one with its launch history, to be this popular so long after release,” as user villainized writes.

Numbers like these naturally generate a ton of hype for a game, with many fans taking this opportunity to say how they wish CD Projekt Red would capitalize on it with the announcement of a new Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. The franchise’s future is looking incredibly bright with or without Cyberpunk 2077 ever getting any new sort of major DLC update or expansion, but fans are acutely aware of how long it might be until we see Cyberpunk 2, and wish that a new expansion could tide them over.

User davidarmenphoto believes that Cyberpunk 2077’s Steam player count upsurge is at least partially due to the fact that “it’s currently at its lowest recorded price at $17.99 USD as part of the summer sale.”

Interestingly, the possibility of another Phantom Liberty-esque Cyberpunk 2077 expansion balances on a knife-edge. On one hand, CD Projekt Red announcing a brand-new, Blood and Wine-sized expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt more than a decade after the vanilla game launched is proof that we could be seeing a new Cyberpunk 2077 expansion 10-or-so years from now, too.

On the other hand, though, it’s been officially addressed that we shouldn’t expect The Witcher 4 to receive expansions of its own, as CD Projekt Red instead shifts its focus to its enormously ambitious game slate, including its new Witcher saga. Even so, we know that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is on the way as a part of this slate, which is doubly exciting in the meantime.

Cyberpunk 2 is officially in development.
