DC Officially Reveals Supergirl’s New Legacy-Changing Nightwing Costume

[

DC Comics has officially revealed the first look at Supergirl’s new Nightwing costume, marking one of the biggest legacy shifts in the heroine’s 67-year comic book history. While the mantle change has now been visually confirmed, it remains to be seen whether Kara will officially adopt the Nightwing name as well.

DC recently launched the Kara Zor-El–centric Elseworlds series Supergirl: Survive. The series takes place outside of the main continuity, instead exploring an alternate universe in which Kara and her baby cousin, Kal-El, were sent in the same rocket at the moment of Krypton’s destruction. While only one issue has been released so far, the rest of the series is set to explore Kara’s fight for survival with Kal after their ship is knocked off course on its journey to Earth.

DC Officially Reveals Supergirl’s New Blue Lantern Costume Ahead of Her Next Appearance

DC has officially released the first look at Supergirl’s new costume as she steps into her Blue Lantern era.

The debut issue from writers Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan and artist Rod Reis was a strong start for Supergirl: Survive, and DC is now continuing to build anticipation with its latest solicitation for issue #4, which reveals Kara wearing a Nightwing-inspired costume.

Why Supergirl Is Wearing Nightwing’s Costume, Explained

Those who read Supergirl: Survive #1 will recall that Kara was depicted wearing a Nightwing-esque zip-up hoodie in the narrative. While the narrative didn’t explicitly identify the design as inspired by Nightwing, it’s clear that it is. Fans should also remember that, although Nightwing is most commonly associated with Dick Grayson, the mantle has Kryptonian origins.

In most modern canon, Superman tells Dick Grayson about the legendary Kryptonian hero known as Nightwing. It is this piece of Kryptonian mythology that ultimately inspires Dick to adopt the identity after stepping out of Batman’s shadow. Given that the Nightwing mantle originates in Kryptonian legend, it isn’t surprising to see Kara wearing the classic blue-and-black color scheme and Nightwing logo.

However, based on the preview for Supergirl: Survive #4, it appears that Kara’s casual Nightwing-inspired attire may evolve into her actual hero costume. If this is the case, it would mark a major legacy shift for the character, as she may ultimately end up fully embracing the Nightwing mantle.

What further supports the idea that Kara’s Nightwing look may be evolving from casual wear to a full hero costume is the synopsis for issue #4: “Kara and Kal experience something they’ve never felt before … the restorative power of a yellow sun.” With the cover art depicting Kara already wearing the Nightwing outfit as her primary look and her powers manifesting while in it, this could lead Supergirl to not only adopt a Nightwing costume but potentially the mantle as well.
