The Joker comes with Batman as the ultimate duo in DC‘s latest release. Right now, many are looking forward to Lanterns, which stands as the next live-action DC show on the comic book giant’s schedule. It will also be the first major DC Studios release since Supergirl bombed at the box office. As such, all eyes are on how HBO’s Lanterns performs.
That is allowing a show that is not set in the DCU Chapter One, existing as one of DC’s Elseworlds releases, which are not connected to James Gunn’s DCU, to fly high without any pressure. That just so happens to be a returning animated Batman series. The Dark Knight has long been popular in that medium, all thanks to the seminal Batman: The Animated Series.
That show made Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Mark Hamill’s Joker legendary. Over the years, many actors have played the Joker in live-action and animation. While Hamill reigns supreme in the animated field, Heath Ledger is probably the go-to for most Batman fans when it comes to live-action. Now, Batman’s returning animated series has found the perfect way to bring Ledger’s Joker into another medium.

Cartoonist Bob Kane received sole credit for creating the character for the next 76 years — on every comic, every TV series, every film — despite being only half of the real partnership. Cesar Romero’s Joker on the 1966–1968 ABC Batman series — white grease-paint, green wig, red lipstick, manic giggle — remains one of the most-cited comedic TV villains in American history. Romero, a leading-man matinée idol since the 1930s, agreed to the role on one condition: he refused to do a specific thing for the makeup. You can still see what he refused if you look closely. What did Romero refuse?
✓ Correct! Romero refused to shave his trademark moustache — reportedly a vanity rule he’d had since the 1930s — so the makeup department simply caked white grease-paint over it. In Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, the Joker spends the movie trying to destroy Gotham City by breaking down its symbols. The Joker succeeds in tearing down Gotham’s White Knight in a way, as he drives Harvey Dent to madness and villainy as Two-Face, though Batman chooses to take the fall.
Batman: Caped Crusader season 2’s Joker is clearly inspired by The Dark Knight‘s in a few ways. Like Ledger’s Joker, DC’s new take on the villain spends the Prime Video series’ new episodes targeting Gotham’s, and Batman’s, morality. In both versions, the Joker is trying to show Batman that they are the same. In Batman: Caped Crusader season 2, he compares them to two broken mirrors, with the Joker having accepted all his broken parts, whereas Batman desperately fights the inevitable, trying to fix himself. Additionally, both final fights happen in tall buildings that are still under-construction, which completes the metaphor.
DC’s Batman Series Takes The Joker To His Origins
The Dark Knight and Ledger’s Joker are major inspirations for the animated series’ new Joker, but they are not the only key elements of the DC villain’s history that were pulled from for Batman: Caped Crusader season 2. Another key inspiration came from the man that served as the reason why the Joker looks the way he does. That would be Conrad Veidt from The Man Who Laughs. The show, much like the original DC Comics iteration of the Joker, pulls from Veidt’s look, accent, and mannerisms in the film.
As such, by borrowing from the best live-action version of the Joker and the original inspiration for the character, Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 debuts an intense and absolutely magnetic Dark Knight villain. Needham’s Joker is also less chaotic and more methodic in his evilness. He is calm and collected, soft-spoken, and has a European accent. This is a new, yet familiar, Joker, showcasing some of Ledger’s best aspects in Batman’s new release.
