One of Disney+’s absolute masterpiece science fiction shows is so good that fans of the series paradoxically don’t want it to continue. Normally, as with most beloved shows, fans of the best series on Disney+ want it to continue after its ending. There are so many shows that ended too early, and fans of the series naturally want more episodes of it. Some shows, however, are so good that fans actively fight against attempts to continue it.
That second case is true for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s show, Loki. Loki follows Tom Hiddleston’s titular character, the brother of Norse god Thor and onetime antagonist of the original Avengers movie. The show also follows an alternate version of Loki, and it came out three years after the main Loki’s death in Avengers: Infinity War. Nothing about Loki should have worked, in other words.
Everything about Loki did work, however. The show was an immediate hit. It earned 87% approval with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s one of the best MCU shows ever made, there’s a strong argument that can be made to say it’s the very best of the entire franchise, and it’s absolutely beloved. A show like that should have inspired fans to demand several more seasons, but Loki ended after just two seasons, and fans are completely fine with that.
Loki’s Ending Is So Perfect, Season 3 Is Unnecessary
The main reason fans of Loki don’t want it to continue on for a third season is that the ending we currently have is perfect in nearly every way. The ending of Loki season 2 was as good as it gets. Every character’s journey wrapped up in a satisfying way, Loki was able to save the multiverse and the sacred timeline, he earned a fitting role as the MCU’s most important character, and everything just felt right.
The ending of Loki, most importantly, felt like a worthwhile and earned end to the series. It felt like everything was building up to Loki’s final role as the god of stories, even as the series had to pivot due to Jonathan Majors’ real-life controversies. Loki told a complete story from start to finish, and season 2 felt like the natural end point of everything the series had established and worked towards.
With an ending as satisfying and thought-out as Loki‘s, there’s really no reason to continue the series. Any continuation would just undermine and cheapen the ending we already have. Loki season 3 would have to undo some aspect of season 2’s ending, either by taking some beloved characters away from their well-deserved rewards or by upending the peace Loki, Sylvie, and Mobius worked to achieve. Neither of those options sound satisfying, so fans are content to keep Loki the way it is.
Loki’s Story Is Already Set To Continue In The Broader MCU
Another, more metatextual, reason fans don’t want Loki to continue is because of the MCU’s immediate future. Tom Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as Loki in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to premiere on December 18, 2026. It’s not yet clear exactly what his role is going to be in the upcoming film, but given the multiversal plot points that are likely going to bring Doctor Doom to the main Marvel universe, it’s safe to assume Loki will have some important role as the god of stories.
The MCU Multiverse Saga has not performed as well as hoped, but there is one character who could stand tall and get a heros welcome back to the film.
Loki fans already didn’t want the series to continue on its own, but now that Loki the character is about to have his story continued, there’s even less reason to want the show to get another season. Avengers: Doomsday is almost certainly going to fill us in on whatever Loki himself has been up to as the god of stories, which was the only real reason to want another season of Loki.
So, thanks to Avengers: Endgame, we’re about to get more information on the only loose thread that could have warranted another season of Loki. Loki’s story is going to continue in a new project, which means a prospective Loki season 3 would only really have a continuation of Sylvie’s and Mobius’ stories to spark intrigue. Those stories wrapped up so conclusively and satisfyingly that there’s no desire to see them continue in Loki season 3.
