Disney+ in contemporary times has the best and probably the deepest library of movies and shows from franchises like the MCU, Star Wars, Disney classics, Pixar, and National Geographic. Then there is a plethora of franchises like Indiana Jones, Avatar, The Simpsons, and more that call the platform their permanent home, along with a long list of Disney+ originals. So, naturally, the streaming service that started in the pandemic era under Bob Chapek is among the viewers’ go-to platforms for all things nostalgic or new.
Despite a few industry-standard price increases, Disney+’s prices haven’t caused too much of a stir, starting with a basic ad-supported plan going up to the premium plans, making it pocket-friendly for most consumers. But the service has never been free, as seen with competitors like Peacock and it’s sibling streamer Hulu. But Disney’s new CEO Josh D’Amaro, who succeeded Bob Iger earlier this year, recently revealed that the company is considering a free plan for Disney+ at yesterday’s earnings call.

Disney+ Might Add a Free Tier
Historically, a new streaming service entices viewers to use the platform with free content like Peacock or Hulu initially did. It’s interesting to see a giant like Disney considering free access to its library. D’Amaro explained during the company’s third quarter earnings call, “First, we see it as a way to expand our reach to a customer segment that’s more price sensitive. Expanding our reach is, as we’ve talked about before, one of our strategic priorities.”
The model D’Amaro is suggesting is much like the plans Hulu and Peacock used in their early days, but have since axed. Furthermore, there are platforms like Tubi and Roku TV that are free ad-supported streaming TV but act very differently than a streaming platform like Netflix or Prime Video that churn out a lot of high-budget originals and exclusives. He explained that Disney+ is well placed competitively to generate more revenue based on the free tier, “unlike a lot of our AVOD [advertising-based video on demand] competitors, we’re fairly well sold, meaning more inventory would actually help us accelerate our ad revenue growth,” he said.
Under D’Amaro’s new strategy, Disney+ is acting as a “digital centerpiece” of the company wherein the app is transforming into a more comprehensive membership ecosystem, as he emphasized that a “free offering could help us drive top-of-funnel Disney+ subscriber growth.” Which simply means more consumer data will help the company to drive more growth. However, it remains to be seen how much access the prospective free tier would offer its consumers.
