Dutton Ranch Episode 6 Recap: Chet Is Killed & Joaquin Is Shot

[

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the sixth episode of “Dutton Ranch,” “A Cowboy Saint,” which is now streaming on Paramount+.

Last week’s “Dutton Ranch” was a big one, as Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) both now work at the 10 Petal Ranch for Beulah (Annette Bening). But things won’t be easy, since Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) has escaped from rehab and will immediately cause trouble. Let’s get in the saddle and analyze this week’s rootin’-tootin’ episode!

  • This opening scene with Azul (J. R. Villarreal) and Delilah (Neyla Cantu) is too heartwarming — someone is definitely going to die and ruin their dreams of a family, right?
  • Sad, subtle moment when Rip realizes he never had time to teach Carter (Finn Little) how to fish.
  • “Honey, you’re still impossible.” Aww, love!
  • Whoa, did Beulah and Everett (Ed Harris) sleep together? “You got my hat off my head” … love this development! But show us the scene next time!
  • “I’ll leave the light on, just in case.” Hell yeah, Beulah — get it!
  • I love a cowboy gala! Formal boots only!
  • Can you imagine how bad this motel room with Chet (Hart Denton) and Rob-Will must smell? Yikes!
  • Rob-Will seems imprisoned in a crucible of masculinity. He should find therapy!
  • Ugh, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) — you’re always such a bad influence on Carter! He just needs to talk to Beth and Rip!
  • “I don’t think either of us really know what love is.” Ouch — tough response!
  • Is Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) picking a new hat a metaphor? It seemed like an important moment, but I just saw a big ol’ hat…
  • It’s always fun to see Beth do her “Mad Men” thing and get what she wants. She read Zane Nash (Marlon Young) perfectly, and Beulah helped to seal the deal. Fun teamwork!
  • Damn, are Chet and Rob-Will starting a militia or something? Oz (Jared Bankens) has so many guns!
  • This one-handed roping was fun. All these cowboys are starting to get along! It’s nice to see Rip having a laugh too.
  • A lot of sexual tension in this night scene between Chet and Rob-Will. Maybe they should kiss instead of kill!
  • Well, RIP Chet. You were a moron until the end, as Miguel (Berto Colon) got a headshot in before you were able to take out Joaquin. How is Rob-Will going to process this news?
  • Joaquin looks surprised that Rip has a gun in his truck. Umm … that’s about the least surprising thing about Rip you could ever imagine!
  • Beulah gets quote of the night (which doubles as a tidy summation of both this series and “Yellowstone”): “It’s hard to watch a man love dirt more than blood.”
  • Joaquin, buddy … you need to check in on Rob-Will more often!
  • The lighting in this truck scene is neat — it makes it feel like a noir.
  • Be careful prodding Beth about Jamie, Beulah!

Until next time, cowpokes!
