Dutton Ranch season 1 wraps up with a jam packed final hour that threatens Beth and Rip’s future. In 2026, Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire has grown bigger, thanks to a few new series debuting. That said, while Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell’s The Madison was compelling, all eyes have been on the continuation of the Yellowstone franchise with Luke Grimes’ Marshals on CBS, followed by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Dutton Ranch is on streaming via Paramount+. Between them, there’s no doubt that the streaming show is more like its parent series.
Throughout its first eight episodes, Dutton Ranch laid out the foundation of Beth and Rip’s new life in Rio Paloma, Texas. Admittedly, things haven’t been easy for the pair ever since their Dillon, Montana ranch was caught in a tragedy that forced them to move. That said, no one could have prepared them for just how difficult it would be to start over in an entirely different state. Aside from the challenges of getting the Dutton Ranch up and running, they also have had to make some calculated maneuvers to deal with the new players in their lives. To make matters worse, Carter’s rebellion has gotten so much worse.
However, as if everything that has happened in Dutton Ranch thus far hasn’t been chaotic enough, Sheridan’s latest series saves, arguably, the most intense episode of its run thus far. Titled “El Padrino,” the final hour of its freshman series officially sets the stage for Beth and Rip’s main struggle moving forward.
10-Petals Criminal Enterprise Crumbles
Coming from Dutton Ranch season 1’s penultimate episode, the finale sees the result of two major storylines. Firstly, Joaquin’s call to his dad about Beulah’s decision to choose Rob-Will as 10-Petals’ heir instead of him resulted in Mariano’s visit to Rio Paloma. While this was happening, the Jacksons’ illegal smuggling operation was officially uncovered by Beth and Rip via the latest cattle shipment. Understandably mad at not knowing the truth about the business, Beth and Rip wanted out of Beulah’s enterprise. At this point, everything hangs in the balance, with regard to what their partnership will look like moving forward — if it even exists then.
What’s clear from this, however, is that Annette Bening’s matriarch isn’t the hardened antagonist that she is believed to be. Throughout her confession to Everett, it’s clear that she really wanted out of her arrangement with Mariano, but she just couldn’t find a way to do it. This development changes the trajectory of Dutton Ranch moving forward. For starters, this alters the perception that Beulah is the main villain of the story — assuming that she is telling the whole truth. As established, she’s also just a victim in all of her circumstances. If it was up to her, she would have long left 10-Petals and ran away with Everett. Secondly, it establishes Mariano as the true antagonist of Dutton Ranch, and he’s scarier than the show initially set him up to be. Beth and Rip are not just going up against a fellow rancher; they’re fighting a whole criminal enterprise. Between his money and manpower, the couple has their work cut out for them.
Joaquin Crosses A Line With Rob-Will’s Murder
Mariano’s arrival in Rio Paloma had a ripple effect in Dutton Ranch. One single call from Joaquin had his dad quickly moving, indicating that the older gentleman genuinely cares about his son. That said, his brief but intense conversation with Beulah also established that he believes that she raised him to be soft. Considering how ruthless Mariano is, this tracks. This is also the reason why he left him with no choice but to cross a line by killing Rob-Will. One single shot was all it took for Joaquin to murder his half-brother, although by the time Oreana found her dad, her uncle was already driving away.
Now that Joaquin has personally committed a crime, one would assume that it would be easier for him to go down the same dark path as his dad. That said, his reaction to killing Rob-Will might be telling a different story. Instead of getting high on the idea of getting his revenge, he was clearly disturbed and even sad. This suggests that while he was obedient to what Mariano wanted, he wasn’t totally unscrupulous. Obviously, that can all change, as this crime can function as his gateway to full villainy, the same way that Yellowstone developed Jamie. However, seeing him deal with this inner struggle is going to be a more interesting future for him in Dutton Ranch.
What Does Carter’s Abduction Mean For Dutton Ranch Season 2?
Despite just being caught in the middle of 10-Petals’ crisis, Beth and Rip find themselves being targeted by Mariano. Instead of trying to quietly extract themselves from the situation, they decided to take on the cartel — a bold move, considering their manpower. Admittedly, while the pair faced so many adversaries in Yellowstone, this one felt more dangerous, considering their positioning and frankly, ability to take on Mariano and his enterprise. Somehow, Rip, Azul, Zachariah, and even Everett were able to fend off the men that Joaquin’s father sent. Unfortunately, however, Mariano caught the couple’s weakness — Carter.
Kayce’s Marshals is a hit, but it isn’t the best Yellowstone story that needs to be told. Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan is finally doing it.
With that, Dutton Ranch season 1 leaves Beth and Rip’s backs against the wall, but now fully committed to the all-out war against Mariano. Admittedly, there are still logistical questions about how exactly Mariano knew about Carter, let alone his whereabouts. That said, it’s a brilliant set-up for what’s to come in season 2. The first nine episodes of the series felt like Beth and Rip were merely supporting characters to whatever was happening in 10-Petals. They were ready to cut ties with Beulah after finding out about the drugs. Now, however, that Mariano has made the fight personal, it makes the pair more actively involved in the conflict, which effectively becomes the launching pad for its sophomore year.
Right now, anything could happen with the abduction plot line, but assuming that he is eventually rescued, perhaps it could be the turning point for the character. All throughout Dutton Ranch season 1, Carter was acting out for barely justified reasons. Once he sees his adoptive parents moving heaven and hell just to get him back, hopefully, he comes back to his senses.
