One Dutton Ranch star thought they were signing up for a larger role, but in the end, they felt “misled” when their character barely had any effect on the larger story.
While speaking to Variety during the premiere of his new Apple TV comedy film, The Dink, Harris opened up about feeling “misled” about his character’s role in the nine-episode first season. “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters,” Harris said. “And that wasn’t really the case.” The Westworld star did not keep his discontent with how things turned out. “I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh,'” Harris added. “I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in Season 2]. I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth.”

Ed Harris Was Ready To Leave ‘Dutton Ranch’ in Season 1
Harris plays Everett McKinney, a veterinarian who strikes a friendship with Beth and Rip. He disappears for several episodes before it is revealed that Everett and the show’s advertised antagonist, Beulah Jackson (played by Bening), have had a slow-burn will they/won’t they relationship. But Harris had filmed more scenes than those of him treating the animals or his constant push and pull with Beulah. The actor admitted that a scene where his character sings that ended up on the editing floor “really pissed him off,” and he felt like this turn of events during filming was “enough reason to say I’m voiding my contract.” He recalled telling his team to “get me the fuck out of here.”
Dutton Ranch‘s production was marred by controversy that led to the series creator and showrunner, Chad Feehan, departing before the series premiere. A new report by Deadline reveals that Feehan was let go because of Harris’ complaints, and the Downtown Owl‘s star was included in the decision to choose the next showrunner. Benjamin Cavell will be the new boss and is keeping Harris at the forefront. Everett is expected to have a significant role in Dutton Ranch Season 2, and if things go well, he will return for Season 3.
