Epson EcoTank printer deal: This is one I’d buy at Amazon

I’ve seen a number of limited-time printer deals on Amazon right now, including a discounted Epson EcoTank ET-2861, which is £150 right now (I’ve dropped a link at the bottom of the page). That’s a great deal on a superb printer, but I’m begging you: don’t buy it.

My advice? Save yourself an extra few quid and go for the Epson EcoTank ET-2860 for £137 (was £240). Here’s the big secret: they’re effectively the same printer. There’s no real difference beyond the name, with both able to print, scan, and copy, print from your phone, and the inclusion of three years’ worth of ink in the box.

If you’re buying a home printer these days, I always recommend opting for an ink tank model. First of all, while not as cheap as an inkjet printer, running costs are a lot lower, with ink bottles costing less than replacement inkjet cartridges.

They boast all the benefits of an inkjet printer – expect vivid, high-resolution photos and highly readable text – with speeds only slightly lower than a laser printer. For me, they’re a best-of-both-worlds choice.

And in my experience, and that of my team, Epson still more or less dominates this area of the printing market.

So, what’s the difference between this cheap EcoTank and the ET-2860? Nothing. The change in model number is usually specifying which shop you bought it from – typically, I see the ET-2860 at Argos, and the ET-2861 at Amazon. The dimensions, internals, specs, they’re all the identical.

I’ve actually used the EcoTank ET-2860 loads of times, and I came away impressed. It’s quick to print, output is perfect for home printing, and contains a generous amount of ink packaged with the printer.
