Ahead of the season 4 finale, a major From theory is confirmed, while another is debunked.
From being a mystery box show has led to many theories over the years, including why the characters were brought to the mysterious Township in the first place and Eloise Kavanaugh (Ellie Cluett) secretly being alive. The season 3 finale’s reveal explains the former mystery for Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and Jade Herrera (David Alpay), but not for everyone else.
During a Reddit AMA, From showrunners John Griffin and Jeff Pinker confirmed why characters other than Tabitha and Jade have been brought to the Township, along with debunking the theory that Eloise is still alive. They explained that “Other than Jade and Tabitha, there is a connective theme among all the other characters who were ‘pulled’ into FROMtown. They were each at some sort of crossroads in their lives. Boyd, for instance, had just retired.”
In a separate response, they added that “As Jade now knows, all of the other residents are just ‘minnows’ who unfortunately ‘heard the cries of the children.'” This refers to the phrase “minnows in a shark’s net” in Jade’s visions during From season 4, episode 5. When the residents are brought together in episode 7, he suggests the idea that all of them were drawn in by the cries of the dead children, which is now confirmed to be the case, along with the aforementioned criteria of being at a crossroads.
As for the Eloise theory, Griffin and Pinker make it clear that there will be no secret reveal of her having been alive all along: “Eloise is dead (RIP). A fascinating thing about ‘mystery box shows’ is that the audience creates mysteries of their own. Maybe that says something about our willingness to believe in or seek out conspiracies. But no Eloise is dead.”
Between Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) retiring, Tabitha and Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey) on the verge of getting divorced, and Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder) fleeing after a tragic incident, From‘s characters being at a crossroads in their lives before getting trapped by the Township has been known since season 1. Now it’s clear that this is a main reason why they are there, along with having heard the children and being drawn to help them.
In terms of the Eloise explanation, it puts an end to a prominent From season 4 theory, which gained traction after Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord) shared that he only found pieces of what he believed to be his sister’s body. His other comments about her being good at playing hide-and-seek also contributed to theories about her hiding elsewhere in the Town, potentially even being the source of noise heard at the settlement, but these are now clarified to be details that fans were placing too much importance on.
With season 5 confirmed to be the end of the MGM+ horror series, fans can stop looking for proof about Eloise’s survival, and there is now a clearer understanding of why the characters are in the Township. This sets the stage for other mysteries to be explored and answered before the story’s conclusion.
Some of these are touched on elsewhere in the AMA, including teases of the fallen trees in the road all being different from one another, more answers to come about the Township itself, and whether true escape is actually possible for the residents. The From season 4 finale has also been set up to show whether Tabitha and Jade will be able to retrieve the children’s bones from the caves and what happens when the bottle tree is pulled up.
The From season 4 finale comes to MGM+ on June 28.
