Despite only being a moderate success at the box office upon its 1999 release, Galaxy Quest has since developed somewhat of a cult status. A thinly-veiled parody of Star Trek, the film – featuring an ensemble cast led by Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman – grossed an approximate $90.7 million off a $45 million budget. But despite turning a profit and being met with favorable reviews from critics, the movie never received the sequel it might have deserved.
Some modern viewers say that Galaxy Quest was simply ahead of its time.
In the years since its release, however, the film has developed a considerable following. So much so that it inspired a 2019 documentary, Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary, which chronicles two decades’ worth of the movie’s fandom.
Devotees have been waiting for years to hear news of a Galaxy Quest 2, but have mostly found nothing but rumors and speculation. A long-gestating Galaxy Quest TV series is reportedly still in development, but may be lost in production limbo.
However, the movie did get two comic book follow-ups that many fans may have missed.
The Journey Continues
Years after the release of the movie, IDW Publishing released two series following the further adventures of the crew of the NSEA-Protector. The first, Galaxy Quest: Global Warning, was a five-part miniseries released in 2008, created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Ilias Kyriazis. The comic’s synopsis reads:
It’s been 20 years since the cast of Galaxy Quest ruled the airwaves. Alas, the intervening decades have involved lots of sci-fi conventions and retail store grand openings and precious few acting jobs for our brave band of thespians. Now, on the eve of the re-launch of America’s most beloved science fiction series, Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues, a world-threatening crisis occurs! Will the Earth survive? Maybe, if Jason Nesmith and his fellow actors-turned-adventurers have anything to say about it! In the immortal words of his alter ego, Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, “Never give up! Never surrender!”
After that series concluded, it would be several more years before fans would see any further exploits. But in 2015, IDW returned to the property with Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues from writer Erik Burnham and artist Nacho Arranz. This next follow-up explored the intergalactic fallout of the crew’s actions in the movie:
Once upon a time, a troupe of has-been actors that starred on an old sci-fi show were enlisted by an alien race to save them from an intergalactic tyrant. Despite being way out of their depth, the cast somehow managed to save the aliens and stay alive… but their actions in outer space may have had dire consequences for another world.
Both series of books are difficult to come by today, though they can be found on the secondary market at significantly inflated prices, proving that there’s still an audience hungry for additional Galaxy Quest lore.
What Is The State Of The Galaxy Quest Franchise?
There have been murmurs of a potential Galaxy Quest 2 for years, but nothing has ever materialized, and the 2016 passing of Alan Rickman would leave a noticeable void in the film’s cast. Meanwhile, a series that had reportedly been in production at Paramount+ is now seemingly in limbo after recent studio mergers and acquisitions.
The fanbase is obviously there for more Galaxy Quest, and several original actors, including Sam Rockwell, have expressed willingness to return to the universe. For the time being, the future of the franchise remains up in the air. But either way, thanks to the comics, the story of Galaxy Quest didn’t end when the credits rolled.
