Conversations around the price of Grand Theft Auto VI have been rumbling on since the game was first announced, and the sheer scope of its ambition became clear to the general public.
Many continue to contest that they would happily pay $100 or more for the game, while others fear that making that allowance for GTA VI would eventually lead to that becoming the new norm, for games that otherwise wouldn’t be able to justify the price based on the amount of work that went into them. Now a price for the game has finally emerged online, and while it is expensive, there is every hope that it isn’t final either.
GTA 6’s Digital Price Leaked And You May Have Missed It
As first reported by Insider Gaming, the digital price has surfaced online for the game on Xbox, where it clocks in at £89.99 (which would likely mean the fabled $99.99 mark in the USA). It’s important to note early here that the price is probably a placeholder, but it was more than enough to ignite significant debate among the community under a post sharing the information on Reddit.
This is further brought home to roost by the fact that the same website also has a listing where players can buy PC codes, and that version of the game isn’t set to launch until some time after the console release.
“While I don’t agree with the digital pricing, the hype that this games got is so intense they could charge £100 and people would pay it. If marketing was down to me, I’d just drop the game with zero marketing and watch social media and traditional media do the work for me,” one comment read.
Another was considerably less sure, saying, “I’m a massive GTA fan. I wouldn’t pay £89 for it. Also: There’s no such thing as a guaranteed hit these days.”
GTA 6’s Price Remains A Hot Topic
Until we actually get word from the developer themselves, the price of GTA VI is bound to be a controversial topic among those planning to buy it. Rockstar has every right to demand a decent fee, given the supposed broad scope and ambition of the game, but pushing it to $100 or beyond will likely phase many out until they can get it cheaper.
In the interests of everyone having a great time with GTA VI on launch day, let’s hope they release it for less than that and recoup any lost income via the online modes when they drop.
