GTA 6 Fans Angry Over Xbox Versus PlayStation Ads

[

Grand Theft Auto 6‘s marketing campaign has raised some eyebrows among console players. Set for release in November, GTA 6 is poised to be one of the biggest video game launches of all time. It’s also already stirred up some controversy, with many fans critiquing its gating missions behind the $100 Ultimate Edition and its lack of a true physical release.

Some fans, however, found another reason to take issue with GTA 6 pre-launch: its marketing campaign, which they say is unfair and unevenly split between its two platforms. While the upset is understandable, though, there may be a perfectly good reason for it.

X (formerly Twitter) account GTA 6 Countdown has posted a breakdown of the differences in the game’s marketing on PlayStation and on Xbox. The screenshot collage shows GTA 6 branding plastered all over PlayStation’s social media, mobile app, and the PS5’s UI, while Xbox’s official X account has just one post announcing that preorders are available.

This much is true: the official Xbox account, @XBOX, has only posted once about GTA 6 preorders, although it’s also reposted a couple of announcements from GTA‘s page since preorders were announced. The official PlayStation.Blog also recently put out a post entitled “Grand Theft Auto 6 plays best on PS5,” discussing how the DualSense controller’s unique features are integrated with GTA 6‘s gameplay and sound design.

Many commenters critiqued this marketing strategy, saying it made PlayStation seem “desperate” or to be pushing things too far. Xbox’s relatively reserved campaign, meanwhile, “feels more respectful about it,” according to user Saturn.

Jos Bon, meanwhile, complimented Xbox on showing restraint with its marketing budget. “Xbox is not in good standing to be spending on marketing and promotion. They know GTA 6 is a gold mine with or without promo. Why waste money?”

Still others rejected the idea that GTA 6 “plays better” on PS5. User Kalarepa posted a screenshot of an uncredited Tweet that argues the Xbox Series X/S line’s unique features, including quick resume, Dolby Vision and Atmos, and a higher HDR range, would actually make for a better experience.

On the other side of the debate, PixelArcade wondered, “Why would they market on a dying platform?” Xbox sales have been significantly lower than PlayStation sales this generation, and rumors have been circulating about mass layoffs, studio shutterings, and game cancellations coming at Microsoft later this week.

But console wars aside, there’s nothing sinister at play here. As outlined in the PlayStation.Blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games have entered into a “close partnership” to make use of the PS5’s “immersive features” — and, even if it’s not explicitly stated, apparently, to market the game.

So, while it may be frustrating to see one platform embedding one of the year’s biggest releases into all of its branding while the other keeps it simple, it’s just the result of a marketing deal, and doesn’t warrant all this outrage and console war insult-flinging. Xbox or PlayStation, we’ll all be able to play Grand Theft Auto 6 at launch – it’s only the PC players, who still have no guarantee of a release, who need to worry.
