A veil has been lifted after years of speculation and rumors enveloping Grand Theft Auto 6 now that fans are finally able to preorder their copy of Rockstar’s highly anticipated blockbuster epic’s Standard and/or Ultimate editions. There’s no way that absolutely everybody could’ve been happy about how much Grand Theft Auto 6 would cost, and fans are certainly puzzled about the fact that the game won’t launch with an actual disc in its ‘physical’ release, but there’s simply no quelling the immense hype that most fans have harbored for it regardless.
Likewise, while some fans aren’t enthusiastic about Grand Theft Auto 6’s Ultimate edition paywalling certain content, others are understandably itching to hear more about when the game will launch on PC. Indeed, Grand Theft Auto 6 is marketed solely as a console-exclusive game, and whether it’ll perform better on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S has apparently already been officially confirmed.
According to PlayStation, Grand Theft Auto 6 will play best on PS5. It’s impossible to corroborate or refute this statement since we haven’t seen any gameplay, as user Wizo writes, and it’s not as if PlayStation would admit to Grand Theft Auto 6 playing best on Xbox right as preorders become available. Still, it makes sense why PlayStation is wholeheartedly and unashamedly committing to what is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest video game releases ever.
Users on Reddit were hoping that a statement as bold as this one would at least be reinforced by a declaration of performance, but the blog post backs up the statement with a focus on features like adaptive triggers. Many fans are rightfully unconvinced about it playing any better or worse on either hardware, for instance, and user PlaystationPremium is keeping their expectations in check for the time being: “While I’d love a 60FPS mode, I doubt they’ll be able to pull it off on base PS5. Maybe for the Pro though?”
Ironically, fans aren’t left with much of a choice either way. Because the two options they have are PlayStation or Xbox, anyone who already owns a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S will likely stick to the console they currently have.
However, anyone who has found themselves without a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S and is determined to buy one to play Grand Theft Auto 6 will have a daunting hill to climb that is sure to tear a hole in the bottom of their wallets. Xbox console price hikes were recently announced that come into effect on August 1, meaning that purchasing current-gen hardware is now far more expensive across the board, as PS5 price hikes already went into effect at the beginning of April.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
