Spirits were running high at this year’s Summer Game Fest amid the gaming industry’s excitement for the upcoming release of “Grand Theft Auto VI” — despite the fact the Rockstar Games title had no presence during the four-day event.
No, “GTA 6” wasn’t formally part of host Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Live presentation or during the hands-on media and creator events in downtown Los Angeles. But its presence was felt as release dates were announced that specifically accommodated for the game’s debut, which is set to dominate all sectors of pop culture in November.
And according to the gaming studio executives and developers Variety spoke with on the ground, they’re more than OK with a stacked September (including Remedy’s “Control Resonant,” PlayStation’s “Wolverine,” Nintendo’s “Orbitals”) and a crowded early 2027 calendar (Capcom’s “Resident Evil Veronica,” Amazon’s “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis”) if it means the industry as a whole will benefit from the boom “GTA 6” is set to give the gaming biz.
“I just will take that as a reflection of good for the industry and good for players, right?” Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty told Variety during Xbox Games Showcase, which took place on Sunday amid the ongoing Game Fest events. This weekend, Xbox revealed an Oct. 6 release date (not September, but pretty darn close) for its biggest release of the year, “Gears of War: E-Day,” and set its new “Fable” game to launch Feb. 23, 2027. As previously announced, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4” will come out Oct. 23.
“There’s a lot to play, there’s a lot of excitement,” Booty said. “I think all these games, it just shows that we’ve got an industry with a lot of active development. At the end of the day, it’s great for players.”
Of course, Xbox — and competitor PlayStation — has another very good reason to be excited for the third-party title’s release: Their console sales will undoubtedly go up during the period, as “GTA 6” will release first on those platforms before setting a PC launch.
While previewing their upcoming releases “Barbie Rewind” and “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered” for media, the Atari devs happily joked about being the only brand “brave enough” to go up against “GTA 6” in November, when both the retro “Barbie” and “Godzilla” games are now set to debut.
Even some of the biggest gaming franchises of all time are giving themselves space from Take-Two Interactive’s “GTA 6,” with Square Enix revealing a Spring 2027 window for the upcoming conclusion to its “Final Fantasy VII” remake trilogy.
“I think I can speak for all of the game developers when I say that it’s probably better if we avoid that similar launch window as ‘GTA 6’,” “Final Fantasy VII Revelation” director Naoki Hamaguchi told Variety. “But for our game in particular, there’s still quite a lot of polishments and refining that the game needs to go through before we can comfortably be able to say that it’s ready for launch, but so when we looked at the development and the release timeline, we felt that 2027 Spring was the right window. And it just happened to be after that ‘GTA 6’ launch.”
Overall, the vibes at SGF 2026 were markedly up compared to those from last year and 2024, when layoffs plaguing the industry and multiple game cancellations and releases were the main topics of conversation.
The gaming biz is still suffering from those realities (Xbox just revealed a “reset” plan under new CEO Asha Sharma) but the look in devs’ eyes has shifted from one of fatigue and anxiety to genuine hopefulness that is founded in a very likely truth: “GTA 6” will do everyone some good.
Now as to why “GTA 6” was not the star of SGF, Take-Two has promised that marketing on “GTA 6” will begin in earnest this summer. And props to them for giving everyone else a brief window to shine this June before Vice City takes over everything.
