GTA 6 Local Co-Op Multiplayer Leaves Gamers Torn

Grand Theft Auto 6 could go in a drastically different direction, especially when it comes to the relationship between multiple protagonists. People are going to be talking about the game for a long time, but fans are torn over whether one mechanic should make it in.

Over in places like Reddit, the debate rages on about whether GTA 6 should have co-op multiplayer. While it’s a long shot, folks have strong opinions on it.

Will GTA 6 Feature Local Multiplayer?

Some Fans Would Love It

In case you weren’t aware, GTA: San Andreas had concessions for a local co-op multiplayer mode. It was very limited, but fans reacted positively to it, especially in an era where local multiplayer was starting to phase out in favor of online play. Right out of the gate, fans are skeptical this concept would make it to GTA 6, noting that it would result in yet another delay to add something so ambitious: “No, it shouldn’t. Do you want another 3 years of delays. Y’all’s expectations are way too high.”

Others just think it won’t happen: “Would be very cool, but I doubt it will happen. My boyfriend and I might try passing the controller between Jason and Lucia parts, but I’m unsure how this will be in practice if there are long stretches of missions for just one character, and I’m p sure you can also play as both simultaneously, idk how we’d do any section requiring that.”

Some fans are hopeful about an online mode that’s similar, beyond GTA Online: “Not local, but an online mode would be cool where you invite someone to your story game, and they’re forced to play as whatever character you’re not playing as. I’m hoping for this so my wife and I can play. I think trying to make it local play would cause limitations. Get your own screen, and I definitely don’t want a GTA San Andreas type of coop where both characters are on the same camera and have to stay next to each other.”

Then there’s the group that wasn’t thrilled with how it was handled previously in San Andreas: “It technically did, but it was both players at once on the same screen and you had to stay very close to each other. Also iirc you couldn’t do any missions and such. It was not an enjoyable way to play the game. It felt like it was added just to be able to print “1-2 players” on the box.”

There is a group of gamers who are fully on board with this, though, and are even hopeful that a mod will add it at some point.

Is GTA 6 Still On Track For November 19?

Only Rockstar And Take-Two Know For Sure

Right now, GTA 6 is still on track for November 19, but things could change. Rockstar Games is not afraid of delays, as they’ve shown in the past, and Take-Two is one of the biggest gaming organizations in the business, and knows its audience and the best possible times to schedule launches.

Although a 2026 holiday season release would be pretty big, it’s not like GTA 6 wouldn’t be successful in another release period.
