Half-Life 3 Can Wait, Half-Life: Alyx Is Now Playable Without VR

The good people over at Valve seem to struggle with the number 3. Portal 3, Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 are all but pipe dreams that fans are trying to wish into existence. And while Half-Life 3 is clearly top of many PC gamers’ wishlist, there are no signs that we’ll ever get it. Gordon Freeman is stuck in limbo, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever get to finish his adventure. Step in Half-Life: Alyx to fill the void.

Okay, so Half-Life: Alyx is more of a side adventure than a continuation of the franchise, but it’s still well worth your time. The problem up until now, though, was that Half-Life: Alyx was VR only. A PCVR exclusive, to be exact, meaning most flat-screen gamers have never gotten to play one of the greatest games of all time. Not only is Half-Life: Alyx hands down the best VR game available, it also goes toe to toe with all FPS shooters and delivers an adventure that’s worthy of your time.

Can You Play Half Life: Alyx Without VR?

Locking Half-Life: Alyx to VR seems like a shame as it has alienated millions of gamers up until recently. Now though, thanks to a dedicated modder, Half-Life: Alyx is available to play without the need for VR. No chunky headset, you can now play it on your PC with a mouse and keyboard. Currently, there is only a demo of Half-Life: Alyx which will be available to all soon for free. Soon you’ll be able to explore City 17 and battle the combine without the need for a VR headset, which is very exciting!

The demonstration video shows one playable level in the game, Half-Life: Alyx, which is intended to showcase the modder’s progress and open the game up for community feedback to help make improvements. It takes place at the very start of the game, and it highlights how effectively they’ve incorporated object interactions that you’d usually only find in a VR game. Everything from drawing on whiteboards, to knocking plant pots off ledges is possible with just a mouse and keyboard and the game looks stunning.

The interactions with objects look seamless and help to highlight the incredible hard work that’s gone into making this one of the greatest gaming experiences for all PC gamers. Half-Life: Alyx is an incredible game, and it’s amazing to think that very soon, it will be available for a brand-new audience. Hopefully Jeff the blind monster is just as terrifying on a flat screen as he is in VR!

Thanks to passionate modders, we’ve seen Mario Kart come to PC and now a VR title that everyone should play at least once. While most gamers are anxiously waiting for the next Grand Theft Auto VI trailer to drop, we’ll be keeping an eye on Half-Life: Alyx and it’s progress. Getting another chance to break into the Vault one last time is never a bad thing. If Valve never gets around to making Half-Life 3, then the Half-Life: Alyx no VR mod makes for a fairly decent consolation prize.
