It won’t be too long now until Halo returns, but now that active updates for Halo Infinite have wound down, dedicated fans might find themselves temporarily adrift. For those uninterested in Campaign Evolved, the situation looks even worse, as the wait for the next entirely new Halo game will likely be a good deal longer.
It’s never truly quiet on the Halo front, though, at least if the fans have anything to say about it. In lieu of the typical campaign or multiplayer experience, Halo: Rogue offers a fresh way to take on the Covenant and Flood at no cost of its own.
Curated by Reddit user Active_Percentage289, Halo: Rogue is a Minecraft mod collection assembled into a bespoke Halo experience. True to its name, Halo: Rogue borrows its core concepts from the roguelike genre, focusing on short-burst runs and replayability rather than a long, narrative campaign.
Each Halo: Rogue run starts with three lives, and surviving each day will earn an additional life. The goal is to make it through five consecutive days, but naturally, there are plenty of threats from the Covenant and the Flood standing in your way.
The core concept of Halo: Rogue could just as easily be achieved without the Halo branding, but the mod pack leans into plenty of series staples. Screenshots highlight the inclusion of iconic structures like beacon towers and weapons like the MA56 Assault Rifle and M90 Shotgun, a far cry from Minecraft‘s typical swords and bows. At the same time, it’s still very recognizably Minecraft, replacing the smooth rolling hills of Halo with predictably blocky terrain.
Halo: Rogue is still a work-in-progress, with Active_Percentage289 warning fans that the mod collection “is not perfect” and offering a few examples of advice about how to avoid crashes and other problems. There’s definitely potential for it to overcome more limitations over time, though. Expecting full-scale development on this project would be ill-advised, but an update on May 11 already added shields to Jackals.
If any major shooter pairs naturally with Minecraft, it’s Halo, and the crossover is a cool way to double down on Halo‘s sandbox sensibilities and focus on creative reactivity. As a Campaign Evolved skeptic, I might admittedly be more interested in this than the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 remake. 25 years after the release of Combat Evolved, Halo is the gift that keeps on giving, even if it sometimes appears in unexpected forms.
