In two months, Travis Knight‘s Masters of the Universe hits the big screen. Now, we’ve got another glimpse of Eternia and all its heroes and villains in the form of a new trailer for the film, which will debut in theaters on June 5. An adaptation of the classic 1980s toy line, cartoon, and comic book, Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, the scion of the throne of the high-tech barbarian world of Eternia.
Exiled to Earth for years, his home has fallen under the sway of the tyrannical, skull-faced sorcerer Skeletor (Jared Leto, Tron: Ares). To save his world, he’ll need help from his friends, including Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba, The Wire), Teela (Camila Mendes, Riverdale), the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin, Deadpool), Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Atomic Blonde), Ram-Man (Jon Xue Zhang, The Brothers Son), Roboto (Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids), and Adam’s parents, King Randor (James Purefoy, Rome), and Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley, World Without End). Opposing them are the fearsome forces of Skeletor, including Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie, Community), Trap Jaw (Sam C. Wilson, Dodger), Goat Man (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, Game of Thrones), and Tri-Klops (Kojo Attah, The Beekeeper).
Can You Hum These Iconic Film Scores? It’s the Collider Movie Quiz!
A good score elevates a film’s emotional impact. A great score affects you long after the movie’s over. Here are a few examples of that excellence.
What Is ‘Masters of the Universe’?
After passing on the chance to make Star Wars figures, and subsequently seeing rival Kenner make a fortune off the property, toymaker Mattel was on the hunt for the next big action figure property in the early 1980s. A number of creatives, including Roger Sweet, Mark Taylor, and Donald F. Glut collaborated to create Masters of the Universe, which was inspired by the sword-and-sorcery craze that had made Conan the Barbarian a box office hit. The line centered around a battle between good and evil, in the respective forms of the barbarian warrior He-Man and his arch foe, the skull-faced warlock Skeletor, over the mystical power of Castle Grayskull. It featured a number of innovations that would redefine the toy industry in the 1980s, including miniature comic books packaged with the figures and an animated cartoon series based on the toy line.
This is Masters of the Universe‘s second venture into live-action. In 1987, Cannon Films put action icon Dolph Lundgren into He-Man’s furry boots, and pitted him against Frank Langella‘s Skeletor. The film featured a lengthy detour to modern-day Earth, where He-Man and company befriended troubled teen Courteney Cox.
Masters of the Universe will hit theaters on June 5. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
