Season 3, episode 7 director Nina Lopez-Corrado has explained Helaena’s vision of Dreamfyre in the penultimate episode of the ongoing season. House of the Dragon season 3 has featured numerous developments for dragons, with episode 7 being one of the strongest. This includes the return of Sunfyre, presumed dead since the middle of season 2, as well as a vision Helaena has of riding her dragon, Dreamfyre. In said vision, she rides the dragon while burning smallfolk all around her, a stark contrast to her careful characterization thus far.

Did you ride to glory — or fall from the sky?
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Lopez-Corrado unpacked Helaena’s vision in House of the Dragon season 3, episode 7, revealing the deeper meaning behind her vision. The director explained how the setup for the vision was storyboarded beforehand, with the final cut looking almost exactly as planned. As for the larger meaning, Helaena’s caution around dragons has always been a defining character trait, her vision showing she believes there’s no good outlook on the Targaryens using dragons. It’s symbolic of their chaotic nature, and how she views them in kind.

I’ll be honest with you, it didn’t change much from the original storyboard. But the thing that was really amazing is when the set [decoration] department started to put together the saddle. That’s when it really starts to feel real because that’s the only physical, real part of the whole dragon.
Helaena has such a strong feeling about the dragons in which she’s torn because she thinks that they do change people and that they’ve changed their whole world, essentially. So when she sees herself on the dragon and sees Dreamfyre basically take out all of King’s Landing, internally for her it burns deep…. I think she knows that deep down inside, because she is a Targaryen, there almost is no positive outcome to anything that’s happening in regards to this war in this family. And the dragons, as long as they exist, are going to keep this inner turmoil inside of the Targaryens.
While House of the Dragon‘s characters have gone through many changes in contrast to its source material, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Helaena has perhaps the most different character from her book counterpart. In the novel, she’s described as a talented dragon rider, with the bond between her and Dreamfyre being deep and crucial to her characterization. However, the show depicts her as worried about dragons as a negative influence on the world, to the point where she no longer rides and resigns herself to King’s Landing in the process.
It’s been hinted before that Helaena has visions of the future, her dreams showing her possible outcomes to events that have yet to unfold. In the case of her Dreamfyre vision, it’s unclear if this is something that’s destined to happen should events keep playing out the way they have, or if it’s a symbolic gesture surrounding the Targaryen family’s dynasty. Helaena doesn’t seem the type to burn innocent people, making it appear that her vision is about the larger conflict between her family, and what it may do to the world if things aren’t bettered soon.
It’s not the only dragon-related development this episode, though. Sunfyre also returns to Aegon’s side, confirming he was right about his dragon still being alive. He returns after the King reveals his identity, another symbolic event involving dragons, but one that will have direct consequences on how the final episode of the season plays out. As for the larger narrative, House of the Dragon season 4 is confirmed to be its last, with the series expected to close out by summer 2028.
With one episode left in House of the Dragon season 3, it remains to be seen how Helaena’s vision will play out onscreen. While it doesn’t appear to be literal, given her characterization up to this point, it does seem like she’ll have a role to play in how the chaos of the dragons continues to define the show. What her final fate will be remains unclear, given the many changes her character has gone through, leaving plenty of surprise about how the season will come to a close.
