Hit Sci-Fi Horror Movie Based On A Mind-Bending Book Getting Special New Release This Year

Star-studded sci-fi horror Annihilation is returning, but with a twist.

Some iconic sci-fi horrors have changed the way the hybrid genre is viewed and have been insanely successful. Titles such as Ridley Scott’s Alien, David Cronenberg’s The Fly, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, The Substance, Jordan Peele’s Nope, and 10 Cloverfield Lane have all been iconic cinematic attractions, which have either become cult classics or were instant successes.

Alex Garland’s mind-bending release from 2018, Annihilation, is returning in a surprisingly special way. A limited edition SteelBook featuring a 4K edition of the sci-fi horror will be released on Amazon on September 8. It includes two discs: a 4K Ultra HD copy of the movie and a Blu-ray disc featuring special features such as a look at the visuals and special effects.

Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny, Sonoya Mizuno, and David Gyasi. It follows a cellular biologist accompanied by a group of scientists and doctors as they enter an anomalous zone formed when a meteor strikes Earth. However, the group ends up stumbling upon a sinister and strange phenomenon. The movie is based on the novel by well-known science fiction writer Jeff VanderMeer.

Garland’s sci-fi was initially a massive box office bomb and grossed roughly $43 million worldwide against a reported $40 million budget, which was a massive loss for Paramount Pictures. With poor test screenings and fears the movie would fail, Paramount sold the international distribution rights to Netflix, which severely limited its global reach.

Despite being what is deemed a failure to many, the reviews tell an entirely different story. Critics rated the movie a solid 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and they stated that the movie is “masterfully mind-bending,” and “Alex Garland’s trippy little cosmic horror film manages to awe, horrify, and perplex all at the same time. A modern classic.”

The new release gives audiences a chance to watch the stunning visual effects in an entirely new way, and provides a whole new experience watching Portman’s Annihilation. Despite its rocky box office performance, the movie itself has proven to defy the numbers and captivated critics and audiences alike.
