With six wins in total, it was Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically poignant One Battle After Another that left this year’s 98th Academy Awards the most victorious. In second place, Ryan Coogler’s beloved vampire flick Sinners took home four golden statues, and in contrast, the likes of Marty Supreme left the ceremony entirely empty-handed. Among these likely wins came a selection of surprises, from a split decision in the live-action short category to a refreshingly shocking winner in the Best Supporting Actress race.
Against all odds, considering the historical bias against the horror genre by the Academy, Amy Madigan won the Best Supporting Actress prize for her beloved role as Aunt Gladys in director Zach Cregger‘s horror smash, Weapons. Also starring the likes of Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and more, the film went viral after its theatrical debut thanks to a strong marketing campaign and word-of-mouth. In total, the movie made $270 million from the global box office, split between $152 million in domestic revenue and a further $118 million from overseas markets against a reported budget of just $38 million.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the indication of Oscars glory was evident, as Weapons earned a near-perfect 93% score from critics. The consensus on the site reads, “Zach Cregger spins an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue in Weapons, a sophomore triumph that solidifies his status as a master of horror.” At the time of writing, Weapons is proving popular once again as one of the ten most-watched movies on Prime Video in the U.S.
