How Mel & Langdon’s The Pitt Story Breaks A Long-Standing TV Tradition Addressed By Taylor Dearden

[

Taylor Dearden has explained how Mel and Langdon’s story in The Pitt breaks a long-standing TV tradition.

The series star addressed how, despite the expectations that come with a close male and female relationship in medical dramas, Mel and Langdon have defied the odds. The Pitt season 2 begins with Langdon’s return to working at the titular ER after 10 months, continuing his contributions while also reigniting his close friendship with Mel.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan at PaleyFest, Dearden explained how The Pitt allowed her and co-star Patrick Ball, who plays Langdon, to give a male-female character relationship a platonic boundary. The star explained the pair’s approach to Mel and Langdon as friends, saying such a close relationship on TV doesn’t always have to be romantic:

ScreenRant: You’ve given your take on Kingdon, and I think you’ve talked to us about it, but just expanding on that, you talked about their friendship. What has it meant for you to grow that friendship between those two characters, and also as actors on set?

Taylor Dearden: Actually, Patrick and I have talked about – we both have opposite sex, close friends, and we’ve never seen it really on TV or in film, it always has to be romantic. And I remember Patrick once told me, he’s like, “It feels like a privilege to be able to show it like this.” And I was like, “I agree because it does feel representative of real life.”

ScreenRant: I have that too. I have guy friends, and people are like, “Would you ever?” And I’m like, “Ugh.”

Taylor Dearden: Yeah, and there’s a line that is in our heads that’s, yes, it’s technically possible, but it’s just like, “Oh no, they’re on this side now.” Yeah, yeah.

As stated by Dearden, the realism of The Pitt is what makes Mel and Langdon’s friendship so important. The two of them are close, with Langdon acting as mentor while Mel teaches him how to perceive certain approaches to patients differently. They build off one another professionally, which, in turn, strengthens their personal relationship with each other.

But that doesn’t mean the pair are built for romance with one another. The Pitt‘s characters are decidedly professional when it comes to their relationships with one another, with a few notable exceptions, such as Robby and Noelle Hastings. It helps ground the series in realism while defying expectations of a typical medical drama’s approach to such subjects.

In addition, the series has already established why a romance between the two wouldn’t work. For one, Langdon is married with children, a fact that’s brought up semi-frequently throughout the show. While his wife almost left him following the end of The Pitt season 1, he put his family back together by going through his recovery program, something he doesn’t want to jeopardize.

As for Mel, her biggest focus in life is her sister, Becca, who she ensures is taken care of when she’s off-shift. This manifests in season 2 when Becca initially refuses to tell her all the details about her UTI, since Langdon is her doctor and, professionally, can’t disclose details himself despite their friendship. It’s clear the pair’s professional boundaries will keep them as friends.

Thankfully, this works well for the pair, whose platonic friendship, despite being of opposite genders, adds healthy representation to the TV ecosystem of a male and female who are strictly close friends. It’s a healthy approach to the pair that makes the most sense within the context of the show, keeping it grounded and making it clear how important friendship can be.

Since Dearden and Ball have talked about maintaining this friendship connection between their characters, it seems reasonable that The Pitt season 3 will offer a similar approach once the show comes back. It makes sense for the pair to continue embracing what makes their characters so special going into the next chapter of the series’ ongoing history.

With The Pitt season 2 just a few days away from ending, it seems inevitable that there will be more scenes involving Mel and Langdon before the show bows out. The pair’s friendship is an important aspect of the show, and one that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
