The Turkish Detective is a crime drama thriller set in modern-day Istanbul, where three detectives – Cetin Ikmen, Mehmet Suleyman, and Ayse Farsakoglu – investigate and solve murder cases across the city. Adapted from the Inspector İkmen novels by author Barbara Nadel, the show uses real Istanbul locations, offering viewers a fresher setting than the usual European backdrops.
While Ikmen is an old-school detective who trusts his intuition and is warm and witty, Mehmet is more of an “outsider,” having been raised in London. He is more procedural and professional in his approach. Ayse, on the other hand, represents the younger generation of detectives, embracing challenges and leadership and often serving as the voice of reason within the group.
With each episode running around 50 minutes, the cases usually span two episodes each. Besides this, Mehmet’s personal story and Ikmen’s family dynamics remain a constant thread throughout the series, adding emotional depth and continuity. The creators also use Istanbul as a character in itself, with bustling streets and neighborhoods influencing on-the-ground detective work.
