All the major AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity can generate images these days, but when it comes to editing an existing image, there’s one AI tool that’s ahead of all the rest.
I’m talking about Gemini and its Nano Banana image editor. You don’t need to know anything about image editing to use it; all you need to do is go into the Gemini chatbot, upload your photo, and then ask it to perform the desired changes.
The results from Gemini when it comes to editing your photos are better than the other AI tools right now, mainly because Gemini’s Nano Banana has mastered the art of leaving the rest of a photo the same and just changing the bit you want.
Eyes wide shut
Gemini is particularly good at fixing bad photos you’ve taken. For example, I took a very bad selfie of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. Two people had their eyes shut, and one was out of focus:
I uploaded the image to Gemini by clicking the + button, and asked it to “Make everybody look in focus and make them look at the camera”.
The Gemini-generated results look much better:
Teenage kicks
If you’ve got teenage kids, you’ll be familiar with their resistance to smiling and looking happy in photos. That’s where AI can help.
Take this picture I snapped of my son just as his plate of the traditional British delicacy, fish and chips, arrived. As you can see, he looks overjoyed to be on holiday with his parents:
I uploaded the picture and asked Gemini to “Make him smile and remove the glass in the foreground”, which resulted in a more usable image:
The great thing about using Nano Banana and AI like this is that you really don’t need any expertise in image editing; you can just use natural language expressions, and best of all, it’s all free to use, so you don’t need to purchase any extra software.
Nano Banana is also quick. It generated these images in seconds. When I asked ChatGPT to do the same task, it seemed to have to think for a painfully long time (well over a minute) before it slowly built an image that looked like an uncanny valley version of my son. It’s so weird, I’m not even going to post it here.
Right now, Gemini is hands down the AI you should be using if you want to rescue a photo.
