Iain Armitage appeared on a CBS series for the first time since Young Sheldon ended, and it effectively explained why Sheldon hasn’t been in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage despite fan clamor. It has been two years since Chuck Lorre’s first The Big Bang Theory prequel ended, not because there was a lack of interest, but because it reached its organic finale. Young Sheldon‘s legacy continues in the 2025-2026 TV cycle thanks to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which functions partly as a sequel with regular appearances from Mary and Missy, even though Sheldon has yet to make an appearance.
Marking his CBS comeback, Armitage recently appeared in Ghosts season 5, episode 16, “Woodstone Royale,” where he played himself joining a poker game hosted by Sam and Jay in the Woodstone mansion. This was the actor’s first appearance on the network since Young Sheldon ended in 2024, which was quite jarring, since Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 serves as a lead-in for the supernatural series. It was still great to see Armitage again in a comedy, but beyond that, his guest role sheds a light on the real reason why Sheldon hasn’t been in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Iain Armitage Shared That He’s In A Rebranding Period
Since he played himself, Ghosts leaned on the fact that Armitage is best-known as Sheldon in Young Sheldon. What was more interesting was the actor’s response to being recognized as the iconic character, saying that he’s currently rebranding, as he tried to come out of the shadow of being a child actor. He even mentioned being cast in a poker film, hence why he was partaking in the Woodstone event.
While there’s no indication that this project is actually happening in real life, Armitage’s comment about rebranding fits with his previous comments about doing other different things after he wrapped up his stint in Young Sheldon. Before nabbing the role, he already had a string of projects under his belt, including The Glass Castle, Law & Order: SVU, and Big Little Lies. Understandable, when he landed Young Sheldon, it became his priority, but now that it’s done, it’s understandable that he wants to branch out and flex his acting muscles more.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Erasing An Original Character Allows It To Run Forever
An original character is noticeably absent in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2, episode 15, but that paves the way for the show to not end.
This can be chalked up as a reason why Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage hasn’t brought back Sheldon. Similar to how Jim Parsons has distanced himself from the same role in The Big Bang Theory, Armitage is looking for ways to expand his portfolio, and as big of a blessing Young Sheldon was, it could have stereotyped him. This would make it tricky to be considered for roles that are significantly different from Sheldon. Of course, this doesn’t mean that he won’t come back when asked, but he’s also not pushing for it — at least right now.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Is Doing Just Fine Without Sheldon (But He Still Needs To Return)
In any case, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is doing just fine without Sheldon. The Montana Jordan and Emily Osment-led sitcom is network TV’s most-watched comedy of the cycle, and it’s already confirmed to return for a third year. Lorre, with Steven Molaro and Steve Holland have done a great job toeing the line between telling a new story and honoring its Young Sheldon origins. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage needs to establish its own identity separate from Sheldon, as well.
All that being said, it’s still vital that Sheldon appears in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. He remains a part of the Cooper family, and for the series to properly set up Georgie’s The Big Bang Theory story, the boy genius needs personal contact with his brother. Beyond that, it would just be odd if Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage ended without Sheldon coming back to Texas, even for special occasions. If the series can find a way to bring back dead George, then it shouldn’t be difficult to see Armitage’s character again.
