IKEA just launched a shapeshifting furniture range, and I spent far too long trying to figure out each item’s hidden secret

Clever design is what IKEA is known for, but the Swedish homeware titan has really outdone itself with its latest collection. The PS collection is based around “playful functionality”, and the 30-strong 2026 collection that went on sale today goes hard on both parts. Almost all the new additions have some kind of hidden secret — whether it’s an easy chair that’s actually inflatable, or a floor lamp that can flex and bend like a flower searching for the sun, or a stool that can be winched to the perfect height.

The range is a particularly good fit for small homes. Anyone who’s short on space knows that multifunctional homeware that can be used in different ways to really earn its floorspace is a big win. Plus, the PS 2026 Collection includes a number of pieces of furniture that can fold up almost completely flat. From side tables that snap closed like a suitcase, to full-sized dining tables with legs and struts that can be removed and attached to the underside of the top plate, there are plenty of options that can be reconfigured to create extra space when they’re not required.
