After the success of Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, it seemed like Guy Ritchie had finally reached the top of Hollywood’s hierarchy. He broke out with a couple of acclaimed British crime comedies that went on to become cult classics, and then proved that he could deliver big-budget franchise hits as well. Sure, he leveled up with the rather unexpected Aladdin live-action remake, but nobody complained when that film grossed more than $1 billion. However, despite Aladdin‘s success, it wasn’t able to spawn the sequel that was promised. This happens to be a recurring theme in Ritchie’s career, which has been rather uneven in the last few years.
While his streaming work — Netflix’s The Gentlemen, Prime Video’s Young Sherlock, and Paramount+’s MobLand — has proven to be popular, the same cannot be said of his theatrical output. Following the two Sherlock Holmes movies, Ritchie has had no success in his attempts to launch franchises. He tried several times, with movies such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E., King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Aladdin. But Ritchie also directed a straight-to-streaming release some years ago, and even that failed to launch a franchise like it was supposed to. However, the movie in question recently passed a major milestone on Apple TV, proving that there was an audience for it.

Guy Ritchie’s Movies Tend to Do Well at Home
We’re talking, of course, about the action-adventure film Fountain of Youth. Modeled after the Indiana Jones movies and produced on a reported budget of $180 million, Fountain of Youth starred John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, and Domhnall Gleeson. The movie opened to poor reviews, and is now sitting at a 35% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s consensus reads, “Despite its glossy production and some impressive set pieces, Fountain of Youth can’t overcome a derivative and uninspired story that fails to capture the creativity of the countless action-adventure flicks it cribs from.” According to FlixPatrol, the movie has spent more than 350 days on the domestic Apple TV viewership charts, despite competition from major titles such as F1, The Family Plan, and the streamer’s record-breaking hit, Greyhound.
