Interview With The Vampire’s Future After Genre-Changing Vampire Lestat Clarified By AMC Boss

The future of Interview with the Vampire just got a clarifying update.

AMC’s critically acclaimed supernatural drama recently returned to audiences with a bit of a revamp. The third installment shifts the focus to Sam Reid for The Vampire Lestat, taking after the novel that Anne Rice published in the mid-1980s. Reclaiming the spotlight, following a relatively reduced role in season 2, The Vampire Lestat follows its titular character as he becomes the world’s first immoral rock star and embarks on a multi-city tour.

The change hasn’t hampered the show’s reception. The Vampire Lestat sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is similarly sturdy with audiences, enjoying an 89% approval. But it is precisely because of that established fandom that there are questions about what the future of the high-profile adaptation will look like when The Vampire Lestat concludes its seven-episode run on July 17.

In an interview with The Ankler‘s Lesley Goldberg, AMC exec Dylan McDermott was asked about what the future of Interview with the Vampire could look like beyond season 3. McDermott, who is AMC’s Chief Content Officer and President of AMC Studios, offered some insight into which Anne Rice novels could be adapted next. He also gave a direct answer about the number of seasons the adaptation is aiming for:

The natural next books in the cycle that could continue the story would be The Queen of the Damned and The Tale of the Body Thief. We’re discussing right now if that is something that we want to do. We’re also looking at all the books in the canon and figuring out how to continue the Louis Lestat and Molloy and Armand story for another two seasons at least.

It seems that Interview with the Vampire has the audience’s interest to keep running for a few more seasons. Elsewhere in the interview, when asked about whether the Vampire Lestat title change impacted viewership, McDermott replied in part: “To say it’s significantly overperforming for us would be accurate.” No specific numbers were shared, although it’s clear that the AMC brass is pleased with how the series is going.

For context, The Queen of the Damned is the third title in Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles. It comes after Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat, focusing on Akasha and zeroing in on her plans to destroy Lestat. The character makes an appearence in The Vampire Lestat, portrayed by Sheila Atim, so it’s a natural fit for a potential season 4.

As for The Tale of the Body Thief, it refocuses on Lestat and serves as Rice’s fourth book in the Chronicles saga. McDermott’s answer also makes clear that the likes of Jacob Anderson’s Louis and Eric Bogosian’s Daniel Molloy are not going far. That’s great news for those that have come to enjoy the different dynamics between Interview with the Vampire‘s characters.
