It’s only been 5 months since Ryan Gosling floated across our screens and stole our hearts in the rather excellent Project Hail Mary movie. Yet, it would seem that even though the credits rolled, the adventure is not quite over yet. If you wanted a more immersive experience with everyone’s favorite science teacher, Ryland Grace, and his buddy Rocky, then you’re in luck. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars is almost upon us.
A mixed reality experience from the veteran VR team known as Maze Theory, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars is set to launch on mixed reality and virtual reality platforms late 2026. Available for Meta Quest 3/Pro, Android XR and Pico, this space survival sim will explore a yet untold chapter of the Project Hail Mary adventure. With original writer Andy Weir fully behind this game, it’s exciting to wonder what we’re getting. Here’s what we know so far.
It’s Official: Project Hail Mary Returns In 2026 With A Brand-New Story
As mentioned above, this won’t be like anything you’ve read in the book or seen in the movie. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars will take place during Ryland’s space adventure, but it will be a completely new part of the mission not yet seen before. With Rocky by your side, you’ll be tasked with keeping the Hail Mary alive. Your very own play space will be transformed into the cockpit of the famous spaceship as you do your very best to keep all systems functioning in this new space adventure.
Interacting with object in zero-G and communicating with Rocky through hand gestures alone looks like a ton of fun. Mixed reality games offer a certain wow factor as you get to transform your living room into a workable cockpit and glancing out into the expanse of space, where usually your fireplace would be, never gets old. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars is visually stunning and getting any expansion on this wonderful book and movie is always welcome.
The creative team behind the game also have some serious VR credentials. They are responsible for bringing great games like Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow and Doctor Who: The Edge Of Time to our VR headsets and a well-known property such as Project Hail Mary feels like a perfect fit for the team. You can sign up to their newsletter now to receive early news, access and more for the game.
With Andy Weir busy working on his next project, it’s not quite clear how much involvement he will have in bringing Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars to VR, but with the team of Maze Theory busy at work, the game is in safe hands. VR fans have been waiting for another sci-fi adventure ever since Half-Life: Alyx first appeared many years ago and hopefully Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars can deliver on all fronts. At the very least, it might scratch that space adventure itch while we all wait for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn to launch later next year. Fist my bump!
