- Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer The Wrecking Crew
- Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista will star in the action-comedy film
- The Amazon Original Movie will be released in late January
Prime Video has revealed the first action-packed trailer for its next original film The Wrecking Crew.
The Hawaii-set action-comedy flick, which stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, will make its debut on Amazon‘s streaming platform on January 28. It’s high time, then, that the company’s entertainment division showed us some actual footage ahead of launch.
One of 2026’s first new Prime Video movies, The Wrecking Crew sees the pair play estranged half-brothers Jonny and James. Forced to team up after the father is mysteriously killed, it isn’t long before the duo begin being pursued by the Yakuza. Cue Jonny convincing James to uncover the truth – and learn more about their old man’s enigmatic past when family secrets resurface.
Joining Momoa and Bautista on this humor-filled thrill-ride are Claes Bang (The Northman), Jacob Batalon (the MCU’s Spider-Man film trilogy), Stephen Root (Barry), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), and Temeura Morrison (Star Wars). Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) is on directing duties while Jonathan Tropper (Your Friends and Neighbors) penned the script.
Will Prime Video’s next film wreck the competition, or be a big fat dud?
Based on its trailer, The Wrecking Crew won’t appeal to Prime Video’s entire demographic. Indeed, there are users who aren’t fussed about action movies, while others will wait to see how it reviews first before deciding whether to hit play on one of the world’s best streaming services‘ latest movie offering.
If recent history has taught me anything, though, it’s that The Wrecking Crew has all the makings of being another hit for Prime Video.
For one, it looks like the kind of big, dumb fun that viewers will stick on for an easy, brain-disengaging watch after a long week in work. Add in the fact that it stars two pretty popular actors in Momoa and Bautista, its explosive set-pieces, and cheap laughs, and it already comes across as the type of film that the streaming generation can enjoy for what it is before moving onto the next thing.
That’s a formula that Amazon has previously used to great effect with action-oriented flicks. Just look at its 2024 Jake Gyllenhaal-starring remake of Road House, or last year’s John Cena and Idris Elba-fronted Heads of State movie for proof of that. With over 50 million and over 75 million views, respectively, the pair were sizable hits for the streamer. That’s in spite of their respective 52% and 68% critical ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, too.
Frankly, I expect The Wrecking Crew‘s final review score to land in a similar ballpark, but I also wouldn’t be stunned if it follows the aforementioned duo’s lead and chalk up a comparable viewership. I guess we’ll find out for sure in the weeks following its global rollout on Prime Video.
