Jon Bernthal’s R-Rated Disney+ Show Is The Perfect Binge After Spider-Man: Brand New Day (#10 Trending In The U.S.)

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was one of the highlights of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and thankfully, audiences can experience more of Bernthal’s incredible work right now on Disney+. Bernthal is known for his performances as a hard-around-the-edges tough guy, often playing anti-hero roles, and combining action and heroism with more grounded and gritty emotion in his performances.

This can be seen in a handful of his projects, which can be viewed on Disney+’s platform, including The Walking Dead, where he has a prominent part in the first two seasons, and again in The Bear, where Bernthal plays the deceased older brother of Carmy. However, Disney+ is also home to Jon Bernthal’s most beloved turn as Frank Castle, and we are not talking about the recent Marvel Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Before Bernthal ever set foot into an MCU project, Netflix had cultivated a thriving Marvel shared universe of its own, building from the extremely popular Daredevil series starring Charlie Cox. Bernthal debuted in the role during the second season of that series, and due to the popularity of the character and Bernthal’s stellar performance, he ended up leading a solo The Punisher series for two seasons before Marvel decided to take more control on the TV side.

Now, The Punisher series in its entirety resides on Disney+, alongside the rest of the Marvel catalog, which means anyone with a subscription can watch more of Jon Bernthal as his inimitable Frank Castle. And it seems as though that is exactly what many others are doing, with the series climbing to become the #10 most-watched TV series on Disney+ this week (at the time of publishing).

The series obviously has a much darker tone than Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as the focus shifts away from a hope-fuelled young superhero to a more grizzled and hardened man who’s been on a mission to dole out justice since his wife and children were killed, but the series offers valuable insights to the character that vastly enhance the experience of seeing him join the MCU proper.

The Punisher, along with the rest of the Netflix Marvel shows, has proven to be a popular and enduring part of the MCU, with these characters now being integrated into larger stories. For instance, with Daredevil: Born Again, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio got the chance to revisit two iconic characters from the Marvel Universe.

And importantly, during the first season of that series, a huge part of the narrative revolved around Frank Castle, and how his mission for vigilante justice appeared to inspire corrupt cops who wanted a chance of dishing out their own brand of justice against people that they deemed unsavory.

From there, Jon Bernthal has now starred in his own special presentation and taken on a major role in arguably the most popular MCU movie in the entire Multiverse Saga to date. But more than that, the entirety of the Netflix Marvel universe is set to join the MCU with the upcoming reunion of The Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again season 3.

Outside of that, Frank joining a major feature film release and the opportunity for more of these characters and crossovers in the future is creating a space where Frank Castle’s crossover is the tip of the iceberg. Going forward, there are plenty of directions for these characters’ stories to move into, which makes it the perfect time to go back.
