Kirk is officially guaranteed to make it to the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — both Kirk brothers.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will begin to lay the groundwork for the prequel’s planned ending: the handover of the USS Enterprise from Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). However, there is another Kirk serving on the Starship Enterprise since Strange New Worlds began: James’ older brother, Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte).
Reported by TrekMovie, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actors Celia Rose Gooding, Dan Jeannotte, and Chris Myers appearing on stage at Trek Long Island. Jeannotte confirmed that Lt. Sam Kirk will appear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ two remaining seasons, “til the end.” Read Dan’s quote below:
Dan Jeannotte: I am in season 4, I’m in season 5, I’m up in it til the end, and it’s been my pleasure but also my curse to be on a show that’s got a dozen incredibly talented and charming actors who are more important than me. And so, you know, I would love to have had more time on there, but there’s just so many great characters, so many great actors to fill up that space. But yeah, I’m still there.
Dan Jeannotte also reflected on his time as Sam Kirk, and the “free rein” he had to create his character, compared to the legacy and expectations on Paul Wesley’s shoulders playing the future Captain Kirk. Read Dan’s quote below:
Dan Jeannotte: I feel so blessed to be in this whole world, and to be a Kirk is incredible, and it’s really fun to get to play the one that… no one had really created the role before. All I had to do was be better than a corpse. And whereas, like, Paul has a lot to live up to, right? And a lot of expectations to manage. So I just got to have free rein. It was wonderful.
Before Dan Jeannotte embodied him in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, George Samuel Kirk made his lone canonical debut in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1’s “Operation — Annihilate!” Since Sam was already dead when he was introduced, there was no need to hire an actor. Instead, William Shatner, wearing a mustache, played the deceased Sam.
Jeannotte self-deprecatingly jokes that “all I had to do was be better than a corpse,” but he instantly made Sam an endearing and memorable character. Brainy and affable Sam is also a welcome contrast to his brash little brother, Jim. Jeannotte and Paul Wesley have winningly conveyed the Kirks’ sibling rivalry in their few scenes together on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Another amusing difference between Sam and Jim Kirk is their relationship to Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck). Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is building the eternal friendship between James and Spock, which is a foundational element of Star Trek. However, for some reason, Spock dislikes Sam, which has been amusing to watch. Sam has better friendships with other Enterprise crew members.
Although they haven’t been seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Sam has a wife and young children, which is another way he differs from James. However, Jim’s on-again/off-again girlfriend, Carol Marcus, was pregnant with their son, David, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. Since David should now be born, perhaps Sam has something to teach Jim about fatherhood.
Thanks to Dan Jeannotte, it’s great to know that Sam Kirk will be there until the series’ end, and that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will depict the reasons why Sam opts to leave the USS Enterprise when Jim becomes Captain. Hopefully, the Kirk brothers get more scenes together before that happens.
