Legend Of Zelda Fans Treated To Unexpected Free Remake

[

It’s hard to believe The Legend of Zelda was officially released over 40 years ago, and fans have been excited this year to see what Nintendo has in store to celebrate the momentous occasion. While there have been several exciting rumors, such as an Ocarina of Time remake, as well as plenty of Zelda-themed merch drops, fans haven’t gotten the big announcement they’ve been hoping for just yet.

Luckily, the Zelda community has access to some incredible fan-developed projects, and there is a ton of content out there if you’re looking for a completely new and unique experience to keep you busy while waiting for Nintendo’s inevitable 40th Anniversary big reveal.

Fans can check out this first-person perspective 3D remake of the original The Legend of Zelda that is 100% free and available to play now, and it comes completely out of left field, introducing gameplay mechanics from a beloved and unexpected classic (via Lifehacker).

This Zelda First-Person Overhaul Is Incredible

It turns out there’s an unofficial The Legend of Zelda remake rebuilt entirely in the OG DOOM engine which allows you to experience the original game from a first-person perspective. The Legend of DOOM is a completely free to download, fan-created passion project from DeTwelve Games that is available now, assuming you understand how to use DOOM mods and can jump through a few hoops to get it up and running.

The remake places players in the first-person DOOM Slayer POV and allows you to play the original The Legend of Zelda game, immersing you in a 3D version of the classic 1986 experience. This means that, as opposed to seeing just one map at a time and traveling from screen to screen, you can actually look into the distance and explore a sort of crude, “open-world” Zelda experience.

Further, it includes a full remake of the original game, with all nine dungeons, the various iconic items, weapons, and enemies, and more. It’s touted as a must-try experience for anyone who loves the original 1986 Zelda game, offering players a unique nostalgia trip that is sure to impress.

The Legend of DOOM mod is the original Zelda remake that diehard fans didn’t know they needed in their life, and even if it isn’t an official Nintendo-approved project, it’s arguably the closest we’re ever going to get to one. The installation process for The Legend of DOOM can be a bit overwhelming, but it’s well worth the effort, and there’s a step-by-step guide here on LifeHacker that will walk you through the process pretty easily.

Fans may be growing restless waiting for Nintendo to finally announce their official The Legend of Zelda plans for 2026 and the 40th Anniversary of the original game, but The Legend of DOOM mod can help take their minds off things for at least a moment.
