The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary is passing by this year, and fans have been celebrating in all sorts of ways, not least by returning to the older games to try and replicate the good time they had as kids. Whether it’s Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker, everyone has their own favorites, and there are more ways to get involved than ever before.
A big part of the resurgence of the older games is the stellar work of developers who are actively decompiling their code to get the games to run natively on PC. That obviously opens up a world of possibilities for players, modders, and developers, and it seems that one of the most underrated 2D Zelda games of all-time is next up on the hit list.
Over on YouTube, you can find a video showing off the latest build of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap running on PC. That comes about as a result of the work of Matheo Vignaud on his GitHub. It’s very cool to see the game running on PC at all, and it has to be said that it looks great, with some spectacular options on the table for further progress once a final build has been reached.
The comments reacting to the video were also hugely positive, with many delighted at the number of games that have recently been decompiled for transfer to the PC.
“I really like Minish Cap. I think the art style and the world are very charming. And it’s a continuation of Wind Waker – which itself continues OoT too. A recomp could bring in mod support for higher-resolution audio or even a remixed OST too, and having more buttons available for items to place on. That will be fun,” one said.
“Well, I’ll be damned. I love this game dearly even if it is easy as hell. A PC port will be very welcome indeed. I’d especially like to see a version appear for the Linux-based retro handhelds,” another added.
“I have a strong preference for 2D Zelda vs 3D and as exciting as the 3D Decomp energy is; this is what speaks to me! Especially love the color palette on this one too! Exciting times!” a third said.
Seeing The Minish Cap return once again is a genuinely nice thing to see as a Zelda fan, and a PC port means that we could see a raft of improvements to the original once diligent and ingenious developers get their hands on it. With plenty of other games from the franchise getting the same treatment right now, it really could end up being a bit of a golden era.
