Years in the making, a new animated film was released in theaters by Angel Studios this past week, while Netflix unveiled its latest cartoon title for audiences at home — incidentally, both movies tackle prescient political themes. It seems like families chose to watch the Netflix movie over the theatrical one. Meanwhile, both The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, delivered excellent results over the weekend. At the same time, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continued drawing crowds as it passed the $900 million mark worldwide. The animated sequel was expected to cool down by now, making way for Netflix and Angel Studios’ new movies to build on its momentum.
While Swapped, the new Netflix animated film featuring the voice talents of Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, took the number one spot on the streamer’s viewership chart domestically, the theatrical alternative struggled. Directed by Andy Serkis as his lead-in to next year’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the animated film marked a couple of disappointing firsts for Angel Studios. The niche distributor specializes in faith-based content but has been expanding its scope in the last year or so. Serkis’ film earned the lowest CinemaScore grade for an Angel Studios release: a C-. It also struggled on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving a 24% score from critics on the aggregator website.
Here’s How Much Andy Serkis’ New Movie Grossed at the Box Office
We’re talking, of course, about Animal Farm. Serkis had been planning an adaptation of George Orwell‘s dystopian novel for quite some time, initially envisioning it as a performance-capture project at Netflix. However, with his big-budget Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle movie being offloaded to the streamer, costs were cut on the Animal Farm project. It had a reported budget of $35 million, but it managed to gross only around $3.4 million in its opening weekend of release domestically. This was good for a sixth-place finish in the weekend rankings behind fellow new release Hokum, which is playing in around 1,000 fewer locations nationwide. Animal Farm features a stacked voice cast including Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Gaten Matarazzo, Kieran Culkin, and Serkis himself.
