The final trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu was released last week at CinemaCon. The film, which is Star Wars’ first theatrically released title since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, features another adventure of Din Djarin and his adopted child. As the first movie in the franchise in so long, a lot is riding on the new Jon Favreau-directed film.
With expectation also comes challenges for The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s a film that has to check a lot of boxes, all while delivering a story that appeals to both hardcore Star Wars fans and general movie-going audiences. However, the new trailer shows that The Mandalorian and Grogu has already overcome the film’s biggest challenge.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Needs To Be Many Different Movies At Once (But The New Trailer Proves It Can Do It)
It’s the checking of all the various boxes that makes The Mandalorian and Grogu such a difficult movie to make. For one, it needs to feel like a Star Wars film, and one that belongs on the big screen.
It must do this in order to fend off criticism that the new movie is just The Mandalorian season 4 adapted to meet a 2-hour runtime. This also means it must have the stakes of a Star Wars film, with a story that is deserving of a place in theaters.
Additionally, the pressure is also on The Mandalorian and Grogu to be something of a genre blend of a film. On one hand, it’s expected to be a buddy cop film with Djarin and Grogu at the center, while it’s also supposed to embrace the science fiction aspects that are typically present in the Star Wars franchise.
Additionally, there’s the added component of a political thriller, with the fall of the Empire resulting in Imperial warlords scattered across the galaxy.
The new trailer appears to show many of these elements. The political thriller twist is certainly present, with Imperial warlords shown on the ice planet Hoth (something fans have also seen in previous trailers for the film).
There also appear to be many science fiction concepts, both old and new, that appear in the new trailer, with plenty of aliens, spaceships, and planets from a galaxy far, far away. The trailer also emphasizes Mando and Grogu as the heart of the story, which checks the buddy cop box as well.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Could Be Exactly What Star Wars Needs Based On The Newest Trailer
The Star Wars franchise is in need of a win right now. Lucasfilm and Disney have struggled to get a film out into theaters for years now, and in the meantime they’ve focused primarily on television series, some of which have been lauded upon release.
Others, such as The Book of Boba Fett, have proven to be not so successful with critics or fans, which only adds to the pressure on The Mandalorian and Grogu. This is why the new film checking all of these boxes is so crucial and exactly what the franchise needs right now.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is a film that is expected to be a lot of different things all at once, and the trailer shows that Jon Favreau and co. might actually be on the verge of pulling that off when it releases in theaters next month.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22.
