There are very few franchises that are inseparable from their makers, and probably at the top of that list is Mario Kart with Nintendo. The series has spent, quite literally, decades causing us to get annoyed by those utterly abhorrent, evil red shells, banana skins, and the edge of Rainbow Road. But it’s not going to be Nintendo exclusive for much longer.
An unofficial PC version of Mario Kart Wii will enter beta in August 2026. Titled Mario Kart Wiicompiled, the fan-made project rebuilds the 2008 racing game to run natively on computers rather than through traditional emulation, which is a huge leap. The project comes from YouTube creator Patchzy and is not an official Nintendo release, it should be noted. Players will still need to provide their own legally obtained game files, but it’s a smoother, more flexible way to experience the Wii game without requiring the original console, Wii Remote, or Nunchuk that you probably smashed against a wall.

‘Mario Kart Wiicompiled’ Includes More Than 200 Tracks
The beta is going to include over 200 courses, taking them from the original game and its active community of custom-track creators, while it’ll also support the optional Retro Rewind feature, which adds modern touches and additional content for players who want something beyond the 2008 experience. The initial announcement footage showed the game running with extremely smooth frame rates with sharper visuals and the ability to support higher resolutions too. And with it running on PC, the ability to add custom characters and whatever else the modding community comes up with should be limitless.
Like replacing Mario with Gordon Ramsay throwing fine dining at opponents instead of green shells, or sending a family SUV around Moo Moo Meadows. Nintendo did not spend decades refining its characters for this, but history suggests modders will proceed regardless. This is part of a rapidly growing wave of “recompilations” that convert console games into PC apps, and a project based on Kirby’s Return to Dream Landhas also been announced.
Mario Kart Wii originally launched in 2008 and became one of the Wii’s biggest titles. The official game remains exclusive to Nintendo hardware, meaning Wiicompiled does not represent Nintendo abandoning exclusivity or releasing the series on PC. Mario Kart Wiicompiled enters beta on PC in August 2026.
