Markiplier’s ‘Iron Lung’ Set For May 31 Debut On YouTube

Iron Lung, the breakout feature from filmmaker and content creator Markiplier, will debut on YouTube on May 31st. 

The filmmaker announced the film’s YouTube premiere date this morning during a panel in Cannes, which was moderated by Deadline. The film will be available for purchase on YouTube. The release will be a YouTube exclusive. 

Announcing the release, Markiplier described YouTube as his home. 

“I’m pretty loyal to it,” he said. 

Iron Lung opened in cinemas on Jan. 30 and has now topped over $50 million worldwide against a $4 million budget. The film had practically no marketing spend and reached audiences through Markiplier’s large social presence. 

Iron Lung was produced, written, and directed by Markiplier, who also stars. Based on the breakout indie horror game of the same name by David Szymanski, the story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic future following ‘The Quiet Rapture’, an event that causes stars and habitable planets to vanish.

The synopsis continues: “A desperate attempt to explore an ocean of blood on a desolate moon unfolds when a convicted individual is sealed inside a decaying submarine nicknamed the Iron Lung — a descent into dread that becomes as psychological as it is physical”.

Co-starring are Caroline Rose Kaplan, Troy Baker, and Elsie Lovelock. Markiplier self-released the film in the U.S. but partnered with Piece of Magic Entertainment to release it in several international territories, including Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czechia, Slovakia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

During the panel, Markiplier also joked that he isn’t planning to work on another feature for “at least one year” to spend time with his wife.

“Next year I’ll be working on something,” he said.

Cannes runs until May 23.
