After a near six-week break, the Champions League returns with round 7 and what feels like a hugely important game for both Marseille and Liverpool. The French side head into the tie 16th in the table with nine points from six games, three short of a place in the top eight, while the Reds are also outside of the automatic round of 16 spots, though only on goal difference.
Despite Marseille being lower in the table, they will believe they have a great opportunity to earn a crucial victory when they welcome Liverpool to the Stade Vélodrome. Roberto de Zerbi’s side have won their last two Champions League fixtures, a 2-1 victory over Newcastle and a 3-2 win at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and thrashed Angers 5-2 in Ligue 1 at the weekend.
Such was the dominant nature of the weekend’s win that De Zerbi was able to change his entire attack on the hour mark, giving Mason Greenwood, Amine Gouiri and Hamed Traoré a much-needed rest. The trio were all on the scoresheet against Angers and will look to expose a Liverpool defence that is prone to individual errors.
The Reds do come into this game unbeaten in 12 matches, but there is a growing sense of frustration around the club. Arne Slot’s side have struggled to break down teams playing in a low block and were extremely wasteful at the weekend, scoring just once from 32 attempts against 19th-placed Burnley.
Despite the negativity, there are some positives. Huge Ekitike continues to excel, while Florian Wirtz is increasingly influencing games and producing moments of magic. With Mo Salah also returning from AFCON, Slot will hope his attack can fire and deliver a crucial European victory.
