Marvel Officially Confirms Fan-Favorite Cameo in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2

[

The Marvel multiverse is one of infinite possibilities, and now that Daredevil: Born Again is definitively tied to the larger MCU, it opens the door to a lot more connections to other movies and shows. So far, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has crossed paths with a number of MCU veterans like Ms. Marvel‘s Yusuf Khan (Mohan Kapur) and Hawkeye‘s Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton), and that doesn’t include brief references made to Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Valentina Allegra De Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in both seasons of the hit revival. However, Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum has just confirmed another cameo appearance hit the show’s most recent (and best-rated) episode, and it’s one that’s very easy to miss.

Long before Charlie Cox’s return as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Marvel released its first-ever animated MCU project with What If…? — the ambitious anthology series that showcases alternate universes where heroes can be villains, villains can be heroes, and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Howard the Duck (Seth Green) had a child together. The 3-part series also served as the official MCU debut of The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), who is an interdimensional being of phenomenal cosmic power who finds himself routinely breaking his vow not to interfere with mortal affairs when the fate of the entire multiverse is at stake. The Watchers, as an organization, technically made their MCU debut via a cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which also confirmed a long-standing fan theory that Stan Lee‘s cameos were all the same person), but Jeffrey Wright’s main Watcher is a pivotal character in the Marvel Comics who commonly appears during major events.

In Episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again, eagle-eyed fans noticed a window that Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) breaks through bears a striking resemblance to The Watcher’s iconic bald visage, with even the indoor lights looking like the character’s glowing eyes. This understandably led many fans to theorize that this could be The Watcher’s first appearance in the MCU series, and now, that theory has seemingly been confirmed by Marvel TV’s head honcho. Brad Winderbaum took to his official Instagram page to share a screenshot of the hotly debated scene, captioned “Always watching…,” which practically confirms that the suspicious broken window is indeed Jeffrey Wright’s character watching another historic Marvel event unfold.

Fans Are Desperate to See Daredevil Team-Up With Everybody’s Favorite Web-Head

The Watcher’s appearance in Daredevil: Born Again is about as big a connection to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe as it can get, but fans still really want to see one team-up more than anything. Even though Charlie Cox officially returned to the MCU as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are still begging for a proper adventure side-by-side with Cox’s Man Without Fear and Tom Holland’s Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slinger. Daredevil star Vincent D’Onofrio has previously stated that his contract doesn’t allow Kingpin to appear in a movie at the moment, but Spider-Man’s next adventure, Brand New Day, is already confirmed to feature a number of Daredevil characters, including Jon Bernthal‘s The Punisher and the ninja crime syndicate The Hand. Perhaps we’ll see Spider-Man and Daredevil work together to fight Kingpin one day, but until then, the now-in-development Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is officially going to be a Defenders reunion with the long-awaited returns of Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).

The first four episodes of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 are streaming now on Disney+.
