Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday campaign just got expensive.
Marvel Studios went all-in at San Diego Comic-Con this year, returning to Hall H after sitting out the convention in 2025 and putting Avengers: Doomsday at the center of its massive presentation. The movie has already racked up plenty of attention thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom, the involvement of the original X-Men cast, and the promise of bringing several corners of the Marvel universe together. But Marvel’s Comic-Con presence extended far beyond the convention center.
The studio transformed parts of downtown San Diego into promotional material for Avengers: Doomsday, including the iconic Gaslamp Quarter sign above Fifth Avenue. Now, that elaborate marketing campaign has resulted in a hefty fine.
According to the New York Post, Marvel Studios was fined $160,000 by the city of San Diego after its advertising team covered the Gaslamp Quarter’s historic arch with Avengers: Doomsday branding during Comic-Con. The installation transformed the recognizable landmark into a massive advertisement for the upcoming Marvel movie.
While speaking with the San Diego Union-Tribune, spokesperson Richard Berg commented that “The contractor knowingly created a safety risk and refused to address it,” so it “was cited and fined accordingly.”
The first was issued on Tuesday for $10,000, but that penalty accumulated each day the arch remained. As a result, the fine increased to $10,000 on Wednesday, $20,000 on Thursday, $30,000 on Friday, $40,000 on Saturday, and $50,000 on Sunday. However, it’s unclear whether Marvel Studios or Elevue Outdoor will be responsible for paying the penalty.
The fine may sound significant, but this kind of enforcement is not entirely unusual during Comic-Con. Entertainment companies regularly cover buildings and other downtown structures with promotional wraps during the massive convention, and local authorities have issued fines connected to those displays in previous years. The difference this time is the scale and visibility of Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday installation.
For Marvel, the timing was deliberate. Avengers: Doomsday is one of the studio’s biggest upcoming theatrical releases, and its Comic-Con presentation was designed to generate as much excitement as possible. That strategy appears to have worked.
Marvel’s Hall H presentation included an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday, giving an extended glimpse at Downey’s Doctor Doom and teasing the film’s massive multiversal conflict. The movie brings together characters from multiple corners of the MCU and the former Fox X-Men universe, including Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and several other returning stars.
The presentation also came shortly after Marvel used Comic-Con to unveil another major project. Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider was officially announced after months of speculation. It was also revealed that David Jonsson, who starred in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, would play T’Challa II and the next Black Panther. Both installments will be released in 2028.
Marvel’s elaborate promotional strategy is fitting for a movie positioned as one of the MCU’s biggest crossover events since Avengers: Endgame. The studio has already confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to direct, with Downey playing Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man. The movie is also expected to set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars, which will continue the multiverse storyline.
With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, the $160,000 fine is unlikely to change Marvel’s marketing strategy. If anything, the Gaslamp installation demonstrated exactly how aggressively the studio is willing to promote its next Avengers movie.
