Marvel Unveils New Wolverine With Epic Fantasy Redesign

Marvel introduces a new Wolverine, who wields his iconic adamantium claws and sports his classic hairstyle, but wears a completely new costume that bears resemblance to Logan’s yellow-and-blue or tan-and-brown uniforms. Despite making his comic book debut with a colorful costume that technically clashes with his serious demeanor and brutal approach to combat, Wolverine has barely made any changes to his original suit in fifty-two years of history. Meanwhile, mutants like Rogue, Beast, Angel, and Jean Grey have permanently updated their original look.

That said, Wolverine has made several different redesigns almost as popular as his classic yellow-and-blue costume. The tan-and-brown variation appears just as often, while all-black or mostly black suits are often reserved for secret missions. Of all major Marvel heroes, Wolverine might be the one who wears casual wear during battle the most, often preferring plaid shirts or tank tops, plus leather jackets, jeans, boots, and even cowboy hats. Temporary redesigns like the Fang costume, Wolverine’s noseless transformation, and Ultimate Wolverine’s recent red-and-black suit and full-face mask have all claimed a memorable spot in X-Men lore.

Multiversal versions of Wolverine also add easily recognizable updates to the clawed mutant’s physical appearance, including Age of Apocalypse’s handless design, Days of Future Past‘s slightly older Wolverine, and the second Ultimate Universe’s fully-masked, red-and-black Winter Soldier Wolverine costume.

Hela’s arrival with her army of symbiotes in Queen in Black shakes the Marvel Universe to the core. Iron Man and Cable assemble the Defenders of Light and Dark, Spider-Man brings together the Spider-Friends, and the X-Men prepare their greatest warriors for battle. When Storm and Wolverine fight a symbiote-possessed Mentellenorite in Queen in Black #2 (via AIPT), the realty-warping alien forces Logan to traverse several timelines in a matter of seconds, embodying multiple alternate-universe versions of himself as he falls in the air towards the villain. These include Marvel Zombies‘ “Skullverine,” an eldritch monster “W’ul-verioth,” a medieval “Logan the Barbarian,” and a Smurf-like “Le Carcalou.”

Conan the Barbarian technically exists in the Marvel Universe, and he’s an official member of the Savage Avengers alongside Wolverine. However, Marvel’s license has since expired. This leaves Ka-Zar and Shanna as the Marvel Universe’s resident wild heroes. Somewhere out there in the multiverse, Logan the Barbarian plays a similar role, probably as an unstoppable hero in an alternate sword-and-sorcery past era, or in a different version of the Savage Land. Likewise, Le Carcalou becomes a Spider-Ham-like member of Wolverine’s multiversal variant collection, though his mushroom-filled home reality remains unexplored.

Logan The Barbarian May Be Overpowered In His Universe

Wolverine Would Be Unstoppable In Conan The Barbarian’s Universe

Conan the Barbarian is the greatest warrior of his universe thanks to his exceptional skill and physical endurance despite his fundamentally human limits. Queen in Black‘s Logan the Barbarian removes Conan’s limitations and replaces them with the two most useful traits any warrior could have. This version of Wolverine seems to retain the healing factor that allows him to recover from wounds that would end almost any other hero’s journey. His adamantium claws also provide a decisive advantage against heavily armored knights and supernatural creatures. Combined with centuries of combat experience across countless historical periods, Logan enters this world as a warrior whose resilience borders on the supernatural.

Even though he would probably slice through most regular enemies in this universe as the Barbarian, Logan would still encounter enemies capable of threatening him, particularly the same type of powerful sorcerers and divine beings who can overpower Wolverine in most traditional timelines. An enemy as powerful and tailor-made for Wolverine as Adamantine seems possible within Conan the Barbarian’s continuity. Conan enemies like the immortal sorcerer Kulan Gath and the mind-controlling wizard Thoth-Amon could negate the advantage of Logan the Barbarian’s adamantium claws and rapid healing factor.
