In the age of artificial intelligence, storage requirements have evolved significantly at the top end of the enterprise segment. Legacy systems based on traditional hard drives or connectivity are no longer fit for purpose in critical environments that require large amounts of data storage and deliver very high performance.
It’s where the active-active, all-flash NVMe PAS7700 comes in. This is Synology’s nec plus ultra, the best of the best, “the culmination of Synology’s 25 years of engineering experience in data management and storage,” as Kenneth Hsu, Director of the System Group at Synology, puts it.
What is the PAS7700?
Synology’s new flagship enterprise storage system is designed for Tier 1 environments and mission-critical workloads.
Powered by a pair of AMD EPYC processors, the PAS 7700 supports a staggering 2TB of system memory, delivering the raw performance that the most critical applications like EDA, AI/ML, and production databases demand.
The base unit supports up to 48 SSDs, delivering 368 TB of raw data. When paired with up to seven PAX224 expansion units, the system scales to 216 drives in total, offering 1.65 PB of raw capacity and 8PB effective capacity* – all within a standard 4U rack and using Synology’s bespoke 7.68TBTB U.3 NVMe SSDs.
That allows the PAS7700 to hit 2M IOPS (4K random read) and a whopping up to 30GB/s (64KB sequential read). In total, 16 ports spread over two nodes help move data from and to the wider network.
Key PAS7700 features:
- A dual-controller, active-active architecture ensures non-disruptive service continuity and operational reliability across all layers (storage media, memory, system, network, protocols) while achieving failover within five seconds for High Availability.
- Synology engineered the PAS7700 to deliver unmatched cost efficiency, superior primary storage performance, and reliability at the cost of mainstream storage offered by competitors. It has both inline and offline deduplication for a 5:1 Typical Data Reduction ratio,
- Likewise, its robust data protection capabilities offer the level of flexibility that ITDMs will appreciate. This includes built-in 3-2-1-1 protection capabilities such as immutable snapshots, replication, and offsite tiering/backup options as well as multi-layered security and synchronous replication to facilitate easy 3-2-1-1-0 plan setup.
- Finally, the PAS7700 supports a comprehensive range of file and block protocols, including SMB, NFS, iSCSI, FC, NVMe-TCP, NVMe-FC, NFS, RDMA and NVMe-RoCE.
Synology is moving to the next level
From its humble beginnings, Synology has, over the past quarter of century, transformed into a formidable storage powerhouse, trusted by over half of Fortune 500, DAX 40, FTSE 100, and 80% of CAC 40 companies, with over 13 million global installations and 350 EB of data stored.
As a leading-edge primary storage platform that rivals traditional enterprise solutions in performance and availability, its new masterpiece delivers exceptional performance, availability, and scalability to meet even the most demanding enterprise storage needs.
The PAS7700 and Synology’s U3 SSDs are scheduled for release in January 2026 with POC starting in August 2025. For more information, please visit the official Synology website.
